Cheapest Option for getting a New Key?

G'day,

I only have 1 copy of the key/remote unlocker for my 2000 Camry Conquest.

(It's got the key seperate to the remote, with no obvious sensor built into the key's "handle", if that makes any difference)

I asked at a Mister Minute and was quoted $140 to get a new key... The price simple made me say "Thanks" and walk away without getting details, so I don't know if that was going to include the remote opener??

Where do you go to get a 2nd copy? Do you need the remote "key" as well as the engine key? How much can you get them for? Where from?

cheers

I just bought a 1994 Camry Vienta. It has a single immobilizer/remote built into a key. I only have one, but at least it looks more serviceable than other remote keys I had.

When I asked the bloke about getting a spare remote, he laughed and said I should scrap the original key and have another immobilizer fitted, for it would be a cheaper option than replacing or getting a duplicate made.

I was quoted ~$100 for a replacement remote (Midland Toyota WA). I don't know where to get one cheaper - for the simple reason I cannot really get one elsewhere. The high cost mainly involves a mechanic/technician finding out the particulars of the car's immobilizer, and fixing things up with the new remotes from there.

Is it worth it? In my opinion, it's a rough trade, but the little remote key I have is really nice, I'd like to keep it, and I like to keep things original. I suppose it depends on how much you love your car!

That's my 2c. Sorry I can't help further.

I have a 2000/2001 Camry V6 Conquest, bought around August 2001 and it only came with one key. Went to a key place in Perth but can't the name offhand and bought a blank which they cut using my original then took it to the nearest Toyota dealer(Big Rock) and they programmed it for around $40 from memory and it's still working..

If you have your Users Manual there is a section in there regarding keys. It is well worth a read.

Edit: My memory clicked in last night and I remembered the key actually cost around $140 and the dealer actually came to the party and refunded half..

On the Gen 4 Camrys, to program the key, I believe it's as simple as this:

http://www.camcrew.com.au/forums/index.php?showtopic=1476

If you can't view the page, the steps are as follows...

(1) Turn headlight switch off

(2) Put the key in the ignition

(3) Cycle the key from LOCK to ON three times (within 5 seconds), leaving it on.

(4) The vehicle security indicator will illuminate continuously for 5 seconds.

(5) Press the button on the remote control you want to program.

(6) The turn signals will flash.

(7) Turn the ignition back to LOCK.

(8) DONE!!! Test the remote and you should be good to go.

This is only for Gen 4 Camrys... wouldn't try it on any other, lol.

Excuse my ignorance... Gen 4 Camrys... being the 2000 model I have?

Is the $140 just going to get me a key... or a key + fob/remote?

Sorry, my bad...

Gen 1 - 1982 - 1986 (Old hatchbacks... POS really)

Gen 2 - 1987 - 1992 (The boxy shaped Camrys... sedan and wagon)

Gen 3 - 1993 - Apr 1997 (The curvy widebody Camrys)

Gen 4 - 1998 - 2001 (some in 2002) (The more straight, boxy backend Camrys)

Gen 5 - 2002 - 2006 (The bigger lookin Cams... start of the Altise and Sportivo... Azura etc)

Gen 6 - 2007 - Current (The new beasts... More sleek looking)

I'd imagine you should get the key, with the remote built in. You should seriously check Ebay first though... they might sell em cheap :)

Any info needed, post up :P

Cheers

Gen 4 have a seperate Remote for Lock/Unlock.

I bought 1 about 12 months ago for $40 from Toyota Dealer.

They wanted ~ $15 to program it which takes all of 15 seconds to do.

After reading a thread on here I did it myself and it worked fine.

New Key (which I'm told have a transponder in them) are around $80 + the cost of getting it cut.

Then the Key needs to be programmed to the car which is another ~ $15.

I need a new key for my Gen 4 YR 2000 Conquest so I have been ringing around for prices.

I wouldn't buy off EBay unless you know the merchant.

If its the wrong key any savings will quickly be wasted in postage etc. if they will accept returns.

My 2cents !

Cheers

I know a few who've bought the keys off ebay... they work fine. My grandparent's 01 Conquest has the transponder built into the key... looks like there's more than one.

I tried the exact same sequence on their car to program a key, it worked fine.
