Hi im new to the forums, i have had a major problem with my 87 camry for quite some time now.. when i rev the engine to about 4k it starts to splutter and carry on as if there was a rev limiter.. and will not rise. Would it be a ECU problem? Or fuel? Help appreciated, thanks.

Fuel or spark or air

fuel: blocked fuel filter on old car, making it starve... change filter, only cheap anyway

spark: maybe just a bad or old plugs, maybe old - bad leads,

air: try without your airfilter, may be totaled...

Is it a single spark miss or a shut-off

should be easy to find prob... very much dought ecu.

i think Gibbo may be right....i believe it may be a spark plug problem or even the leads....thts wat it sounds like to me....does it feel like it has lost a bit of power....it may be the leads or one faulty spark plug...

Its acting like a revv limiter.. but dodgey

What do u mean?..are you trying to say, it woun't rev any higher?...

describe what you mean by dodgy, use more words, help us help u...

It could be your fuel pump is packing it in, and motor staved for fuel at high revs

simple , just check fuel pressure...

Okay, when you revv it to about 4k it sounds like a revv limiter and wont go any higher.. and the engine problem light flashes... ECU prob?

ok it sounds very electrical...

but I don't think it will be ecu, with 'that' sort of problem

sounds more like regular spark break down...

Rev the thing at night with no light and you may see a short ...spark jumping from high resistanc in lead or coil

it may be bad plug, easy and cheap to put in new set...

it may be bad lead, if they are old

if you can induce the 'miss' while stationary, pull the leads off one at a time to try to identify which pot is not firing...

elimination is an easy way to find the prob...

it will be easy to find and fix

can only do so much on the net...

Sounds like sparks or fuel pump for sure. The fact that it's stoppin right on the same revs each time means that it's something obvious.

Have you tried resetting the ECU?

Yo whip... tell him how to do a re-sett, he may not know,

it is a good idea.

if he had a mate with same motor, sv21 2ltr,

he could swap dizzy cap & leads for quick and cheap test :)

How do you reset? And will that cause any problems?

no problem

just disconect battery for say 10-30 mins before putting terminals back on battery join them together for a minute to drain off residual power ...

dought very much will solve your prob...

what is the status on your miss,

have you tried anything we suggested to u...?

did u look at the revving motor in darkness?

was it the dizzy cap, leads or a bad plug....

your ball..
