Project 5S-GTE

This is my ST184R Celica.

When i first bought it nearly 4 years ago, it was a basically stock ST184, with only wheels, a cat back exhaust, and a Pioneer CD player.

The first thing I did when i got it home, was strip the stereo from my wrecked SA63 Celica and put it in, aside from that stereo and a pod filter, it basically stayed the same right up until mid 2009... When, after looking around on CelicaTech and 6gc.net, i got the idea in my head that I could turbo it.

Now, the most common way of turbo-ing an ST184 is to simply swap a 3S-GTE from a GT4 celica, MR2, etc in to the car... but I felt like being different.

I decided I would try what a lot of guys in the USA have done... turbo the 5S-FE that is in the car already... Below is a basic list of the parts i used to do this;

Parts used;

CT26 Turbo

3SGTE Exhaust Manifold

3SGTE Dump Pipe

GT4 Celica exhaust flange (to make an exhaust to fit)

K&N GT4 Pod filter

2in Aluminium intercooler piping kit + Silicone Joiners

No brand 26x6x3 intercooler

HKS SSQV Blow off Valve

Greddy Emanage Blue

Blitz MSTT turbo timer

Denso 360cc high impedance injectors.

Walbro 255lph fuel pump

VDO Oil T-piece

heat shielded rubber coolant/water lines

Speco Boost Gauge

Zeitronix WBO2 Controller

Bosch WBO2 Sensor

Zeitronix LCD Display (Boost, EGT, AFR, etc)

The car is currently running and has a pretty safe/basic street tune in it... but after burning out the clutch I decided I need more power;

So here is STAGE II

-Full rebuild (got bearings, rings, gasket kit)

-3S-GE Head - purchased

-New Front Suspension

-New Brakes - Bendix Ultimate Pads, purchased

-New Clutch - Exedy HD, ordered

I have done a few exterior modifications to the car since I purchased it;

flat-black rattle can paint job :D

the most reliable way to clean the maf sensor element is to submerse the maf so the actual element is in metholated spirits, the switch the ignition on.

The hotwire heats up in the metho and the contaminates dissolve. Have found this works better than spraying with electrical contact cleaner etc.

see, turbo set-up has WAY more involved :P thats why im going with S/C haha LOL :lol:

Initial issues:

The unfortunate thing about the stock 5S-FE ECU is the fact that when you boost... it adds timing... now adding timing to a turbo'd engine can lead to detonation... which is BAD!

Now, the REV 1 5S-FE (which I have) will just keep adding timing and let the motor destroy itself, but the REV 2 has a knock sensor, and if it detects knock/detonation it will retard the timing... saving the engine.

So, the seemingly easiest option, is to get a knock sensor and run a REV 2 ECU... but this is harder than it seems.

Between REV 1 and REV 2 Toyota in their infinite wisdom decided to change the pinout of the ECU's (see below pinouts) as well as the dizzy and throttle position sensor... ugh.

This means I need to get a REV 2 loom, and my loom to create some kind of frankenloom. as well as a TPS and Dizzy.

what fun!

Once I get the REV II ECU I will go through the loom install/creation process.

Just a small update:

Ordered a G-reddy E-manage blue today

I decided to go with the e-mange over the SAFC due to it being a lot more flexible, and having found one for the same price as an SAFC would cost me.

I also got a pile of bits off a 3S-GTE on the weekend (Radiator, Heat Shielding, Bov, etc)

will do another update when i re-wire the ECU

Sounds like you have done your research mate. I'll ask the obvious question, what made you choose this path over buying a ST185 halfcut and converting that way?

A couple of things made me chose the 5S-FTE route.

1. I will get more torque better and daily drive-ability from a 5S-FTE than a 3S-GTE

2. It is a lot less work (untill i need to swap out my gearbox and clutch, haha)

3. It will work out cheaper (a decent half cut will run $2,500-$3000, where as this project is looking at costing $2000)

4. I know the condition of my engine, since i recently pulled it down (2 months ago now), where as a halfcut the condition would be unknown.

5. To do something a little different to the norm ;)

How are you gonna put the 200horses to the ground :P

an LSD may come when i do the 'box/clutch

EDIT: apparently the camry E153 came with a LSD, will investigate further

Here is a non-turbo related question.....

Does it look better de-spoilered?

I had to take the spoiler off to get rid of the ant infestation, and i think it looks pretty good without it.

It actually looks pretty good without the spoiler... i guess thats why they call it a spoiler :P

Perhaps a bigger spoiler is in order :clap:

But i would go with no spoiler until you get bored, then put the wing sponsored by qantas on :lol:

Well I fitted the emanage last nite.

Here is a very quick guide to how to do it. . (fuel management only, ign will come later)

The emanage has 6 wires... they connect to the following on the ECU

Red - +12v - BATT (Pink wire, red dot)

Black - Gnd - E01 - (White wire, black stripe)

Brown - RPM - IGF - (Black wire, grey stripe)

White - Airflow In - PIM (wiring loom side, grey wire, black stripe)

Green - Airflow Out - PIM (ECU side, grey wire, black stripe)

Grey - TPS - Not connected.

I will post pics and a better guide later on.
