Hey guys ive been doing research but cant seem to find a definite answer.

If my insurer doesnt know about my mods and i cause an accident will they reject the whole claim or will they only reject a claim if the accident was caused by said mod?

Ever heard the ads when they say "please review the PDS available to see if this product is suitable to you".

I think the Product Disclosure Statement is your best bet apart from ringing them and asking. You can enquire as a new customer (not an exsisting one) if you are afraid to hear bad news.

i found this on a 4x4 site

For modified vehicles by law the insurance company has to cover the claim unless the modification contributed to the accident. The insurance company CAN decline to cover the modifications if they are not specified on the policy or do not meet roadworthy requirements, but they can't decline damage to other parts that are standard or specified. I have seen claims covered where the car had bald tyres (canvas showing they were that bad) We got some specialists to look at the accident scene and the car and it was determined the accident would have still happened if the tyres were in good order. Claim accepted, client told to replace the tyres and we fixed the car. If you have a 6" lift and your car falls over going around a standard street corner in suburbia your insurance company would probably tell you where to go however. A 6" lift and you merge into someone on the road and you would be covered (your insurance company may or may not decide to continue your policy for that car after the incident however depending on their stance on modifications)
is this not accurate?

We're with NRMA, and they no longer require you to list your mods to them. They simply ask you for the value of your mods and add it to your agreed value. Your premium may go up as a result.. you're also not limited to having a certain number of mods like in the past.

So check with your insurance company I guess.

It's pretty hard to do if the car is mangled at the front.

So check with your insurance company

Exactly. People here don't issue your insurance, so we won't know what is and what isn't ok.

Ring them up and ask; I have never been asked my details while enquiring about modifications.

with nrma, as long as the modifications meet registration and roadworthy requirements, and the main policyholder is licenced to drive the vehicle with all the listed modifications, youre covered.

however, if your car is a total loss, the value of the mods will not be included in the value of the car unless youve made the agreed value to include all of it.

with repairs, they will generally issue a cash settlement for the value of the mod as their repairer network wont get a custom exhaust shop to do sublet work.
