surely if the ecu can be set, read, "has to be set"when it is built in the first instance, then it must be able to be altered without any added chips add ons etc. CAPA do have a unit that does just that but each unit services only one car and at around $700+ isn't available to many. So, where are those computer wizards,! There must be a way to build a unit that can be used universally. Where a mechanic can plug his unit in make the necessary adjustments, unplug it, make his comparative nominal charges and away you go. Who can build one? Chip makers piggyback makers etc will hate you.

It's not as easy as you think with some cars like Toyota.

The ECU is programmed at the factory (or where ever it is built prior to being fitted to the car). There are maps inside it that just can not be altered by anyone but Toyota due to encryption and coding standards that are yet to be cracked. Because the cars like the Camry aren't really seen by many out there to be a performance vehicle, no one is really going to invest any time to try and crack the ECU. There would be no guarantee that they would be able to crack it as well.

When Toyota plug in their equipment, they can modify certain parameters but not change the maps inside the ECU. If the need arises, I'm sure they would be able to completely re-flash the ECU with new maps, but this would be ones provided by Toyota made according to their specification.

This is why people either change the ECU completely or use a piggyback to modify the signals to/from the ECU.

if by reset you mean re-mapped (ie. change the fuel curves, etc) then no, this is not possible.

every different car manufacturer uses a different architecture, different code and a different method of encryption (well some have none or very weak)...

point is such a device would not be possible.

the closest universal tool is an odb ii scanner which can be used to read error codes and other information from the ecu
