Tyre size for Kappa 18 inch wheels

Hi All,

It was time to change the original rubbers and I thought that I might upgrade the wheels as well so I grabbed Kappa 18 inch wheels from eBay.

From previous postings I figured out that original tyre size for 18 inch wheels are 225/45R18. However, those size are quite expensive (>$320 in Melbourne) and I want to put something around $200.

So here is the question. Can I put 235/40R18 on them? I know that the diameter of tyre + wheel will be a little small, but I was wondering whether they would be good in operational aspect.

Thats a bit of a change isn't it??

wouldn't you be better with 235/45/R18?

The 235/40R18's are outside of the recommended 3% tolerance compared to stock.

Do you really think it is worth potentially compromising on the safety of your car just for the sake of saving some money? Then if you get in an accident, depending on your local laws, if the size change is deemed illegal there is a good chance your insurance won't cover you. For example, 235/40R18 would be barely legal on an Aurion in Queensland (just because it's legal doesn't exactly make it a good idea), but the same change on an Aurion in NSW would be considered illegal without an engineering certificate.

On top of that, the decrease in overall circumference would result in your engine having to rev slightly higher which in turn results in a slightly higher fuel consumption.

I, too gotten set of 18" kappa wheels and now looking for tyres. I was quoted $240.00 for Kumho KU31 235/45/R18 ... excl. fitting.

For fitting, how much am I expecting? Do I need to do balancing and alignment?

Depends on which tire shop you go to. They all vary in price, but basically if you bring in your own tires, you'd be looking at around $15-20 per wheel for a 'strip fit and balance' plus new valve stem. They may not necessarily have to strip old tires off, but the cost doesn't usually change. Balancing comes standard with most tire fitments and an alignment is only really necessary if your car isn't driving that straight or it's been around 30,000km or so and you feel like making sure it is all in order,

I used the actual diameter of the 595RPM's when comparing to the stock Dunlops and they came in at 2.9% diff - at the outer range of the permissable change. If you want another good $200 tyre a bit closer in rolling diameter then the Kumho KU31 in 45 series - I actually went in for those but they didn't have any stock on the day so ended up with the Federals - that said other than the speedo overread I am extremely happy with the Federals, they've made a world of difference to the handling of the car.

Id say stick to 225/45/R18 or 235/45/R18. Its no use taking the risk to compromise on safety for you, your family and the vehicle for a few hundred dollars.

In the long run if you have an accident theres a possibility that the Insurance will reject the claim...

The good thing is that at the moment alot of Tyre stores have a end of financial year sale, so you might be able to save quite a bit by bargaining.

If you need to, grab the phone and call a few tyre stops within 20 KM's and grab a few quotes :)

Mate I would definately have to agree with the other boys here, for the sake of a few hundred dollars is it worth having your insurance declined because of the chosen rubber.Just stay with the appropriate tyres and ya laughing, sure they might be more expensive than the larger size, I know its bull****, but haggle hard for a good price then go to another dealer with a written quote and ask them to beat that and you will purchase off them, sure they will moan and groan but show them that if they dont want to haggle you will go elsewhere,but dont risk your car for tyres you know are wrong for it,

just my two bobs worth,

OK just to add another one into it. 245\40R18. Anyone tried this size on the Aurion and any issues with them. Only 1.69% difference to the original 216/60R16's

Yes that will be fine, i was running them for a while and only had slight scrubbing on a bit dip with a full car,

      Yeah, kind of what I've been thinking, but due to how bad the drivers are through Chatswood and those areas I'll probs ensure it with someone like AusPost who have the cheapest insurance and will insure me but I will definitely get the cameras you suggested thankyou so much

      If you've answered all their questions honestly & tried all the majors then there's nothing you can do other than find the cheapest quote for 3rd party because that's the minimum you need to be out on the roads. Some 3rd party insurance will also cover your car up to a small amount ($3000) if the other party is at fault & they have no insurance. Because you will be driving around with no insurance for your own car, I suggest getting quality dashcams front & rear to cover yourself incase of any claims you need to make against someone at fault. I recommend the viofo A129 pro duo https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/295468431227 Start getting quotes again for comprehensive insurance, once enough time lapses to have confidence answering those licence disqualification questions without needing to disclose. Usually 3-5 years after the fact....

      Hey guys I'm new here I've run into a pretty major issue, I've just bought myself a 2007 aurion sx6 as an 18 year old red p plater who commutes to sydney city daily around 165km round trip (six days per work) for work. When I was younger I got done with some heft demerits and was given a police suspension (Dec 2022-Feb 2022) in court the judge ordered my license to be canceled (hence the red P plates at nearly 19) and I was suspended again in December of 2023 until March 2024 when I got caught by a camera doing 6km over the limit in the tolls tunnels (stupid ik) - and just before I bought my car I was T-Boned on my motorbike not at fault but a claim was made, most insurers are flat out refusing to insure me and the ones that don't refuse quote me around $5000-$6000 for full comprehensive. Have no family whose insurance I can be added to and as an apprentice I really can't afford $5000 for insurance. I know all of this is a result of stupid decisions made when younger - but if anyone has any helpful tips or advice it would be greatly appreciated I have been on the train for the past 3 months and it's a 4 hour trip each way so kind of need this sorted

      Ticking Hilux 5le

      Hi all, got a 2004 diesel 4x4 Hilux with the 5le motor in it. 250,000 kilometres, i’m the second owner and have had it about 9 months. Since I bought it there has always been a constant ticking noise while driving (anywhere over 1200rpm) but not while idling. Does it while accelerating, maintaining speed and decelerating. No real impact on power and I get about 12.5L per 100km. I never worried about it too much but it’s starting to ***** me off a bit. I’ll link a video below, any clues what could be causing the noise?

      Thanks for the post Aldo. Googling echo upgrades lead me to this thread and now I'm a member. I definitely hear you. I've been looking in to turning my 03 Echo in to a soft roader. I bought it for 2k (clear coat was cooked) back in 2021. I managed to lose my license in it within first 3 weeks. I HUGELY underestimated how much up and go it has. Although on fresh tyres, previous owner went cheap. In the wet, driving hard, I was spinning until 3rd gear/ or around 75kmh. Have been playing around with it, looking at suspension upgrades, bash plates etc, even a snorkel 😂 but best I've been able to come across so far would be swapping suspension and wheels from a Jimny or similar. Would require a bit of custom modifications and therefore engineering certificate etc. There already seems to be some great posts in here. Definitely suspension and air flow seme to be the go. Since we have the old cable 🚠 based throttle, unfortunately we can't do drive-by-wire. I was introduced to that by a workmates 06? Hilux 4x2... That thing pulled *HARD* just from changing the mode selected on the DBW. V6 obviously but yeah. Definitely following this thread and gonna pop the air filter next 👍🏽 👍🏽
