Hi guys,

I have noticed a very small leak of grease from my front passenger side outer CV boot. The boot has leaked about a teaspoon (for lack of a better measure) in a few thousand k's. I have inspected the boot but can't see any cracking or splits.

The boot has the metal bands to tie it on that I don't have a tool for.

Should I get a mechanic to repack the joint and tighten it up or should I do it myself? Anyone have some experience in the area or know where I could get the tools from?

Cheers

Just have a mechanic replace it for you. There is a special tool required for tightening the band clamps around the boot. Don't get them tight enough and they wont hold grease in or keep dirt out.

Depending on which boot you got from factory, I'm going to assume the old style, they will have to remove the half shaft to do it. The newer style can be done in place.

Thanks SD,

I have a facelift 2004 corolla (October built I believe), is there a way I could distinguish between the old/new style? Also, from interest, what type of grease do you pack a CV joint with?

When you, or your mechanic, buys the CV kit it comes with the grease.

I'd say you have the old style of boot as I think the newer boot appeared around 2007, no point checking it.
