Celica ST184 Perfonace Engine

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where I can get a new performance engine to replace my dead ST184 1993 Celica engine?

I bought this 1993 WRC Trophy ST184R Celica for my daughter a couple of years ago and first the head died so I put a new one in but now the oil pump died and as she drove it she managed to snap a rod.

Rather than sending it off to the wreckers I thought i'd make it a pet project and turn it into a performance car.

Performance engine, gearbox (auto), body kit - the whole box and dice!!

I am in Melbourne Vic so if someone can point me to the right direction it would be appreciated.

performance engine? haha. what do you mean by that.

You probably want a 3SGTE

also, dont even bother mating up a 3SGTE (or 3SGE, or turbo 5SFE, etc) with an auto, you will blow the geaebox.

The manual is good for about 300hp, whereas the MR2 Turbo/v6 camry manual is good for up to 600

Your best bet would probably be a 3S-GTE or 3S-GE front-cut with manual transmission and appropriate ECU, depending on whether you want to go turbo or not. Swap the auto box and linkages out for the manual, recondition the turbo or bore the head, custom pistons etc.

It will be an expensive and time-consuming process either way. I've never even come close to doing this though - Mick's the one to talk to.

Hi there.

As the others have suggested, big performance gains will be difficult with the ST184, especially if you want to keep it auto.

The ST184 runs the 2.2l 5S-FE I think? I would look at buying a rebuilt/exchange engine and fit it with the existing auto (unless is also needs rebuild/replacement?) This engine is good for about 100kw and with some minor improvements (like air filter and exhaust) should go well with a minimum of effort.

Otherwise if you want real performance look at a 3S-GTE (from a GT4) or a 5S-GE and turbo charge it. You would probably need to go manual though and it would be a much bigger job. All depends how much time and effort (and $$$) you want to invest.

Good luck with it!

trust me theres limited things you can do to the st184 performance wise especially if your stuck with an auto.

WAY too much time and money invested in mine for the ****tiest amount of gain, sadto say but not worth the gain or the headaches.

As mick said, convert to turbo then ou'll have something to toy with, and having the wrc model *thumbs up*
