I've got an old 78 Toyota Coaster RB11 motor home with worn out alternator brushes on the 20R petrol motor. I've got it apart to a certain extent to replace the brushes, but I can't withdraw the rear aluminium casting where the brushes are housed. I don't want to force it as I'll probably break something.

Anyone have any ideas how to get it off?

The brushes are stopping you from removing the cover, you should see 2 small holes in the back of the cover opposite the brush holders, insert two fine bits of wire in them to hold back the brushes in their holders while you remove the cover, same deal when puting the new brushes back in and the cover back on.
