ok Q ..how many clicks should there be

till the handbrake holds

its a four cyl auto

and I have the handbrake at about 6 clicks

and the car still rolls forwards and backwards

took the drums off to inspect and everything is in good condition

I adjusted the drag on the drums

you can just hear them scraping

so next Q is how do you undo the console to get to the handbrake

cable adjustment .. I cant find the how to do in the repair manual

To answer your first question: 3 - 4 clicks is perfect.

There are more than one adjustment in the cable. you may find that after going to the trouble of removing your console & adjusting the end cable that it makes little or no difference. Before you do that, get under the car. In the centre at about where the console ends you should find a saddle where the cables from the rear brakes meet the one leading to the handbrake lever. Adjust here first, then, if you need to, adjust the one inside.

Failing that you may need to replace the cables (let's hope not, it's not an easy job)

Let me know how you go or if you need more help

the adjustment under car is covered

by the heat shield when the

zorst pipe in the way as well

so scraped that idea to get to it

went for the adjustment at the handbrake

undid the two bolts holding the plastic

and got to the adjustment from the back seat

while lifting the plastic up

you can get to the adjuster

Did it look like the brake shoes were wet? Next question is if the rear is jacked up, will the foot brake hold the rear wheels? Also does the handbrake lever drop with no resistance once its released or feel normal?

Re-read the questions please...Yes to all of them means nothing. The reason I ask about the handbrake lever, is the cables can seize. If it just flops down whilst released, there is a good chance the cables are seized.

ok the cables are not ceased

the brake shoes are dry

the wheel cylinders are not leaking

the adjusters are not ceased

drums surfaces are smooth

put the hand brake on when rears are jacked up

and you cant turn the road wheels by hand

hand brake off and there is resitance ever so slightly

when the rear wheel spins freely

the hand brake clicks to 5 and still wont hold when in drive

taking car back to the mechanic who did the brake work
