Hey all i'm after a bit of help with my 79 model toyota corona. I was given it bout a yr and a half ago from my mum who was given it by her dad whoo bought it new. Its been sitting in the backyard ever since i got it but cant get rid of it since its the only thing i have left of my pop since he passed away. Now i want to make it my daily driver. I currently drive a 60 series landcruiser daily but want to make it more extreme and less road friendly and also owning a vn ss and vy commodore the mrs wont let me buy another car.

So my plan is to make this my daily to work and back. I want to replace the old starfire engine with something a bit quicker and a hell of alot more fuel effecient then the old carby 4cyl. Dont want it to b 10sec quick just something to suprise ppl. What suggestions do you have. I was considering a commodore v6 conversion as the conversion could be done for under 2k. Only problem would be getting the rest of the car up to scratch for engineers. Does anyone know what would have to be done to pass an engineers like brakes etc or are there better and easier engine conversions out there that would suit me better.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Occasionally there has been a good 18RG for sale on ebay. Maybe I am a bit biased toward them but if you can get a good one with injection that can be an easy swap and loads of fun. Since the Coronas and Celicas of the era came out with the 18R there would be little to change to make it work.

Lots of people lean toward t 2JZ or similar as they are a fairly compact motor. Good luck finding one though.

If you go for a Commodore motor try to get a late Alloytec motor as they are heaps lighter.

Rotary??

I must say I admire the sentimental streak in you.

Definitely get rid of the Starfire though
