tail light gaskets

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I have a quick question about tail light gaskets on my '03 Corolla. Basically it's the foamy rubber thing that goes in between the light assembly and the metal of the car to keep the water out. Is there supposed to be a glue of some sort to hold the gasket to the assembly or is it just a pressure hold where the gasket relies on the screws that hold the light to the body to keep the gasket nice and tight at the same time?

Thanks.

Well my foamy bits are getting hard on the edges and the pressure points seem dry and thin. Should I replace these seals since I have everything in bits and pieces at the moment? It's held up for about 10 years so far...

Toyota charges about $20 a gasket for each light, so $40 all up from todays quote.

Sikaflex? Not sure on the logistics of the tailight assembly and body, but in most cases Sikaflex is used to seal taillights to the body. You can buy it in Calk form and possibly just a tube. Thats the black sticky stuff that never properly "sets" but remains sticky throughout its life. Maybe some of that would do the shot
