Hey All, Newbie 101, forgive me if i posted in the wrong place.

Has anyone had any experience with the aftermarket aurion/camry indash sat navs units that look OEM?

I found old posts but nothing keeping it update?

Theres a couple of different models on ebay, all have dvd slot, usb and usually two SD slots and DVB digital tv receivers.

- cheap $300-400 7inch models with horrible GUI's and unknown gps software running on Windows CE 6 approx 500-600MHz CPUs, these seem to have three buttons on each side. Some units claim to run as dual-boot devices into Android, i think 2.1-2.3.

- An ozzy seller selling a 8inch with five buttons on each side (like OEM?), running "custom flash", but the unit, i think, has the best silver/grey finish

- And the one im really interested in, 8inch apparently 1GHz cpu, 1G ram, running android 4 ICS $650 but no DVB receiver.

How cool would that be with a bluetooth OBD scanner and Android Torque! Proper custom electronic dashboard - Thats GTR trickery!!

Whilst im on AV, anyone had a good experience with digital TV tuners and antenna? years ago i had cardcredit sized transparent antenna for back window (with small booster) that had amazing digital reception, cant find them anywhere now.

I found the audio quality to be shocking with the unit I got. This was a big factor to me as i spend a few hours a day in my car. The interface was also buggy so I went for a pioneer nav unit. Way better.

As it goes, you pay for what you get.

Let me know what you find out please I would like to update with sat/nav/Bluetooth. I love technology but I'm not sure which unit is better, also updating maps?

if you use your phone as a wifi hotspot (or use 3g usb dongle) the Android head unit could run google maps with real time traffic status.

igo seems a popular navi software (some include it) maybe good a wise backup for driving without phone reception.

You could also pay for tomtom software.

i dont think any units have capacitive screens though, the stylus is a resistive screen give-a-way.

But sound quality is the biggest issue for me, unless i can hear someone else's installed unit, i not cant risk the purchase.

RASWO - do you mean the sound quality is bad through the RCA preouts and amplifier OR just the headunit's amp straight to the speakers?

Also which model did you buy? the three/four/five button (on each side) model? 7 inch or 8 inch screen?

pretty sure i had it thru the preouts to an amp. The one i had was an 8" one from extinx. It cost about 400 bucks, didnt have any GPS software (but could install it).

motorola xoom 8.2 android ics tablet indash with clarion headunit ( in the wrong place!).

i wouldnt reccomend this as diy, but im happy.

would have been alot easier with a 7 inch samsung!!

I Gotta say that looks pretty trick.

how much did it cost ya in the end whats the model numbers etc?

Ive been pretty happy with the grp buy version ,the one they did a while back. Had some dramas in the beginning but Steve and George helped me out.

Ive recent added some very very nice 6x9's and a monster amp and I must say being an Audiophile with a bout 20k's worth home audio gear at home ive found the quality of these after market head units (spec this one) to be very good!

Wow, the color of the Clarion headunit and the where it's placed looks like it's meant to be part of the car. Well done!

Just wondering, can a reverse camera be connected to the tablet?

That looks amazing... So this wasn't a DIY job? how much and where did you get it done? I'm looking to do something like this and would love to know the details of this install. PM me if you don't want to post the details here

I think the head unit looks great where it is.

Great work sakana,

I have been trying to work out how to get a similar setup with use of a Nexus 7, really like your use of the Clarion head unit, makes a lot of sense and utilises a waste of console space.

I am very interested to know if you were able to maintain;

- steering wheel controls,

- factory reverse camera,

- Bluetooth connectivity.

The GUI and lack of user function on my 2011 head unit reminds me of technology from the 90's, I now see the light at the end of the tunnel for Aurion owners.
