the ultimate rim

Recommended Posts

what about the brake dust... that would be a mofo >_<;; ...stone chips etc.etc. Would it be game over if u scratched the side of the rim , if it was only one sheet, the structural integrity of the thing would be detreimented, no? O_o

thay are Poly Carbonate plastic! Strong!

So they difficult to scratch the plastic

Strength is different to hardness. Lexan, the stuff they use in bulletproof glass etc, can be scratched with your fingernail. Polycarbonate is commonly used in CDs, and as everyone knows they scratch right before your eyes.

Polycarbonate has toughness, not hardness. This is a good thing, as very hard things tend to be quite brittle, and shatter easily. Glass, for example, which is hard enough to use for crockery (and doesn't get scratched by knives) but drop it on the floor and it will shatter very easily.

Polycarbonate loses it's toughness as soon as you drill it though as it provided a source for crack propagation. Unless they cast the rim faces to shape they would be useless around the wheel studs and crack as soon as the wheel rolled.

Most likely these are made from Trivex produced by PPG and developed for military use as a better bullet proof glass than the current Acrylic based 'polymer glasses'
