Best Oil for 2014 Lancruiser GXL 200 series TT V8 Diesel

Hello all,

I am a new owner of 2014 Landcruiser Diesel, never owned a diesel before and we travel Australia extensively towing a 3 ton caravan.

My question is simple, what grade/brand of engine oil is best suited to my V8 TT Diesel engine? I want to do 5000K filter and oil changes and will not always be able to get to a Toyota Dealership and therefore will carry my own oil/parts to guarantee I do NOT void my warranty.

I have done a lot of research and am told I should be using a 5w40 diesel recommended oil i.e Castrol Edge 5W40 or Castrol Magnetic 5W40 diesel Oil. I have also looked at Penrite and other brands.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for taking the time Mr NG, I have read most of
the 620 pages of the owners manual. I noted the viscosity range recommended. It
does NOT recommend brands (as you would expect). To clarify further I was
hoping someone may have had experience with particular "Brands", you know
semi synthetic VS full synthetic and are there any brands better than others?
Sorry I didn't explain that better, I will go back to researching myself.

I would not have any issues running any of the oils you listed. I use Penrite regularly so I can recommend that, however there is not a huge quality difference across the market.

You need to use oil that meets the specification listed in your manual.

All brands sell good oil and also oil that is basically just sludge.

I very much doubt that Castrol Magnatec meets the specification listed in your owners manual.

Just ask yourself, why and how would oil be magnetic? It is just advertising hype.

The recommended viscosity is probably 5w30. Please check your manual and confirm if this is correct.

That is what is recommended in my manual.

The oil specification is something like CF.

I have recently purchased a 2007 Sahara which has had every service at a Toyota dealership every 10,000kms. It is due for it's 170,000km and the dipstick is showing just on minimum marker. My mechanic says that is about only 2 litres left of 9 litres. I am hoping that it's not "one of those ones" that chews ridiculous amounts of oil. I have bought Penrite HPR5 Diesel 5W-40 Semi Synthetic which states it's ok for use in 5W-30 applications. I will let you all know how it goes!

Hopefully you are right Trent. I drove it back from Queensland to Melbourne and it drove like a dream with no oil pressure lights. I thought only 2 litres left was too little.

The amount of oil that will bring the oil level from the lower dot on the dipstick to the higher dot is only 500 ml.

The engine oil sump takes about 9.5 litres of oil in total.  When the level is at the lower mark, this means that the engine has 9 litres of oil remaining.  Basically not a big deal at all for the oil level to be at the low mark.

My 2008 Sahara has 630,000 km on original engine and injectors.  I run Gulf Western Top Dog 10w 40 semi synthetic oil, spec is CJ4 low Ash . Last EGR inspection at 400,000km revealed no soot. Engine still has same oil pressure as new and great fuel economy....Top Dog oil is for heavy duty truck diesel engines,  not cheap but neither is a new engine..20K plus.

Hi Ross, we have a 2013 Landcruiser. Played with various oils and concluded that 5W30 Synthetic is the best

option. Nulon seems to be on special often, GW is also good. Castrol Magnatec not really suitable for a diesel.

Penrite is also good but try and stick to a full synthetic. No real need to change oil at 5000 Kms unless you worked

the engine towing. I found that the oil level dropped when using the gearbox to slow down like you do in

 a manual. Other then that no oil use at 140k kms. Best oil is AMSOIL, but unduly expensive.

Controversial but I swear by it is a 'catch can'. If you don't have one, get one but the right one for the car. Initially

I was skeptical about its purpose but am sorry I did not get one from the beginning (new). If you check 

the design of the engine, the cam chain run just below the PCV valve. IMHO this promotes oils being flung into

the PCV valve and hence the inlet tract. A catch can will catch that oil - no pun intended.
