Hi guys and girls, I'm currently doing some repair work on my wife's year 2000 RAV4 Edge Manual before it gets passed on to a relative who is just about to get their license.

I have a problem which I believe (at this stage) traces back to the ECU, so I'm trying to replace it.

(On the off chance someone recognises this issue: the middle two cylinders aren't firing, as though the vehicle was in limp mode, BUT no engine error light on the dash. Injectors and spark coils check out OK).

The part number of the ECU in the vehicle is 89661-42690. I'm unable to find a second hand example of that part.

HOWEVER, on ebay, I can find a very similar looking part with the part number 89661-42691. The part is identical in every other way, including the type of car it's suited for which is marked on it:

1AZ-FE 4x4MT

Does anyone happen to know of this part is a suitable replacement for the one in my vehicle?

kind regards

Probably an issue with ECU, which could be related a faulty injector(s).

The latter of the part numbers could be the new number for a superceded part.

It should just be a superceded part and will still do the job as Trent said. With this ECU the immobiliser is in the ECU so you would either have to get one that comes with a Master key, has been reset or get someone to reset it for you so you can use your existing keys.

Thanks guys! I hadn't even thought about the immobiliser. Who would be able to reset it for me? Toyota? A third party?

Toyota can not do it. They can only sell you a new ECU and as this would not have had any keys programmed to it previously you would be able to code your current keys in. To get a replacement ECU reset you would need an Auto Locksmith, they would be able to code your existing keys straight into it so it would be plug and play.

It might be worth seeing what Toyota charge for a new ECU. I have had to replace ECU's on Auto Rav4's before as they have issues, and the ECU's were around $800 from memory.
