Been going over my 2nd hand Aurion (2012) and noticed this on both sides of rear door arches. Photo looks worse than it actually is- You can hardly notice it but its there- on both sides. Looks like tape. Is this some kind of normal protection- or is it something sinister by the seller to hide something ?

Completely normal. They come on all Aurions and are designed to protect the paint on the very edge of the rear quarter panel from getting chipped off when people are getting in and out of the car. Most late model Toyota and Lexus models have them, as do most other makes/models.
