Isopropyl alcohol - Rubbed off my interior plastic paint..

Recommended Posts

So I took ownership of a car and it was quite grubby inside. My go to for cleaning is always isopropyl alcohol but in this instance, it actually started to rub off the silver paint on my plastics most noticeably the letters next to my gear shifter

The dash and doors are really greasy and probably have armor oil on them so I gave the dash, doors and steering wheel a very quick wipe down hoping to remove any greasiness but wasn't that successful.

I'm going to attempt to use warm water and dishwashing soap today but has anyone else had this issue? Should I not be using alcohol on the plastics? I assumed it was safe. I'll post some photos of the wear which I'm not that concerned about as I can easily swap that plastic out.

Does anyone have experience with Meguiar's products? I feel like once all the grime is removed I need something to protect the dash etc.. and I always got told Meguiar's was the best you can buy for interior and exterior.

Also, Merry Christmas!

Isopropyl alcohol is not really designed for the purpose you are using it for and is obviously too harsh. It will likely dry the plastics out as well, as they are petroleum based.

I use Meguiars Quik Interior Detailer, doesn't leave a residue and smells pretty good too.

There are plenty of other excellent products on the market though.
