Gearbox reconditioning

Hey guys, 

My rolla sportivo crunches gears on the downshift in high range rpm of 3 and most gears in 2nd, (this is a 6sp model)

Was hoping to get her repaired. at at rough estimate, how much would i be looking at for reconditioning the box full job vs getting the gearbox out myself and getting it reconditioned. 

 

And the final thing where would be the best place in the sydney or Wollongong region to get this done.

i've fixed lots of these. it is not possible to tell you want it need and therefore how much, until its apart. most only need new syncro rings and seals ($1200 once out of car), but some need hubs and gears. no idea about w'gong...ask around for gearbox specialists

Once you get up around those prices, you need to weigh up whether a replacement gearbox is worthwhile.

most of the used boxes are becoming crunchy in the syncros. its hard to find one under 100,000km so , in the absense of contrary evidence, you have to assume a used box is  no better than what you have.

new from toyota is $4100, so spending $1200-$2000 to reco them is not stupid
