Hi everyone,

I’ve just joined because I thought it time I payed it forward.  I couldn’t really find any definitive video or blog telling me if I could remove the gearbox in my 4cyl petrol Rav WITHOUT removing the engine.  This may be because I am not the best at searching the internet so if what I am about to tell you all is already common knowledge then I apologise.  The answer is ..........Yes you can.  Apparently Toyota workshop manuals say that engine and gearbox require removal as one unit prior to separating..........if this is the case it is not correct.

The box can be removed by removal of the subframe at the rear of the engine that supports the steering rack and sway bar.  This allows ample room to remove the whole gearbox with the differential attached as one unit.  All in all a pretty easy straight forward job with a good toolbox and average mechanical know how.  Take it from me, I wiggled the box every which way and could not get it out until removal of the subframe.  All up removal of the subframe added about 20 minutes to getting the gearbox out.

just putting it out there for anyone else that may be seeking this info.
