Brake fluids

ok heres wat i have read and understood about the different forms of brake fluids....ie. DOT 3 , 4 , 5 , 5.1

DOT 3

- clear or light amber in colour

- dry boiling point is ~205 deg. C minimum / wet boiling point is ~140 deg. C minimum

- mainly used for everyday cars and recommended for normal and day to day driving

- can be mixed with DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 only

- suitable for cars with ABS systems

DOT 4

- clear or light amber in colour

- dry boiling point is ~230 deg. C minimum / wet boiling point is ~155 deg. C minimum

- mainly used in European cars and recommended for high speed braking situations (highway driving etc)

- can be mixed with DOT 3 only

- suitable for cars with ABS systems

DOT 5

- violet in colour

- dry boiling point is ~260 deg. C minimum / does not have a wet boiling point (US DOT 5 spec)

- recommended for heavy braking applications and ideal for cars that are not driven much (antique cars etc)

- does not mix with DOT 3 , DOT 4 or DOT 5.1

- not suitable for cars with ABS systems

DOT 5.1

- clear or light amber in colour

- dry boiling point is ~260 deg. C minimum / wet boiling point is ~180 deg. C minimum

- recommended for applications which require extensive use of brakes (race / track cars etc)

- can be mixed with DOT 3 and DOT 4 only

- suitable for cars with ABS systems

my pick of the bunch would be DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 depending on application.

Dot 4 is best fo rour cars

My car 1ZZFE is due for 40K Services and I believe is time to change the brake fluids. On the services book mention replace with DOT3. Can we use DOT4? Motul, Castrol or PBR. & how many bottles I will need?

I didn't know you could buy DOT3 any more. Either way I wouldn't use below DOT4. I use Motul DOT5.1 without issue.

As for quantity, I'm not 100% of the system volume but I ended up using 2 bottles (about 1L in total). I really wish the fluids came in different colours so it would make replacement a lot easier.

motul RBF 600 FTW :toast:

I have used it before and I can't justify it costing double that of the 5.1

For reference in this thread the

Motul RBF600's dry boiling point is 312*C and wet boiling point is 216*C

AP Racing 600's dry boiling point is 300*C and wet boiling point is 210*C

AP Racing 660's dry boiling point is 320*C and wet boiling point is 199*C

But AP Racing costs even more than Motul.

Penrite Sin RBF600 which is about 2/3 the price of the Motul stuff is also good.

I picked it up for $17.50 for 500mL from Repco which is not much more than the Castrol Super DOT4 I was using before.
