Hi all,

I'm new to the group, but have a technical question. I wish to fit power steering to a 1993 Corolla hatch AE92 body, which currently has manual steering.

I can get a complete kit from a wrecker (with 12 months warranty), but wondered if there is anything I needed to know from you experiences.

I'm assuming the kit will come with:

Pump

Bracket

Rack

Hoses

Pulley

nuts & bolts

Belt.

I have conflicting reports that it may need a different steering column. Come say it will, while others say that the existing manual steering column inner shaft will extend enough to fit the new rack coupling.

Which is right?

Is the manual coupling the same as the power version?

I'll be doing the job on the weekend, so Murphy's law says that there will be bits missing.

What type of fluid does it use? Dexron 11 or ATF?

Any help will be gratefully accepted.

Cheers,

PaulE

I've actually done the swap. I had to use the powersteering column as the non-powersteer did not fit the power rack.

The powersteer racks usally also come with tilt adjust which some of the manual steer AE92's dont get.

I use castrol powersteering fluid.

Nice one Rollamods. Thanks for letting me know that. I'll be sure to get the replacement column as well when I order the parts. Anything else I should be aware of?

Just put it all together, fill it with fluid and it should work???

(Provided Murphy doesn't stick his oar in......)

Hi again Rollamods (and others),

Well, the power steering conversion kit has just arrived from Sandgate Wreckers in Brisbane, and I have to say I'm impressed with their service and promptness.

The bits were so well wrapped that it took me nearly 1/2 hour to unwrap it all. Everything's there (including all bolts and a new column inner), except, is there supposed to be an extra pulley which bolts onto the water pump to run the drive belt?

I haven't looked at the existing arrangement, as it's my dad's car and he's a distance away, so I'm assuming it's the water pump drive pulley which runs the power steering.

So two questions:

1. Should there be an extra pulley?

2. Where do the two small (6mm?) rubber hoses from the bottom of the pump (air control valve??) go?

One has a circlip and the other doesn't.

Hope you can help out.

Cheers,

PaulE

Hi all,

Further to the power steering retrofit on a 1993 Corolla:

All works well. Except.......

The air compensator valve which is on the pump and has the two rubber hoses: One goes to atmosphere with a small air filter. The other one - Where do I connect it?

At the moment, when you put the car on full lock whilst idling, it stalls. Every time. My aged parents are driving the car, and it's getting frustrating for them. Understandably.

The fuel injected version with power steer apparently has a switch connected to the rubber hose which tells the ecu to increase engine speed slightly to prevent this.

Ours is a carburettor version. Doesn't have this facility. How can I fix this?

Would just connecting the hose to a double hose adapter on the manifold so that it allows a small extra amount of air into the mixture help? Or would that just lean out the mixture and make it worse?

Any clever people out there who can answer this one?

Cheers,

Citnut
