Increasing 1zz power

Hi All,

In response to all the pm's i keep getting i thought i would do a single write up so all can benefit from the info. Now as much as we all love to think we can just cheaply and easily bolt parts to the car and hope for massive increases in power e.g. exhaust, CAI/SRI etc this isnt the case with a small capacity 4 banger. So for those looking for quick fixes sorry cant help you there ..... to get significant power increases you are going to have to perform some serious mods and cracking the engine open.

Ok so i keep getting asked about increasing power in a 1zz and in particular stroking the 1zz engine ..... i will get into all the bits and pieces you could do but first i will address the stroker question ..... i will assume people talk about stroking a 1zz is because people have heard that there is a 2zz stroker kit on the market. Now to my knowledge and i am more than happy to be corrected there is NO STROKER kit for the 1zz ...... the way everyone has increased the capacity from the 1zz to a 1.93L or a 1.95L is to bore the engine out. In summary boring the engine out = increasing the engines cylinder diameter & getting a piston that matches the increased diameter. Stock the engine has a 91.5mm stroke and a 79mm bore. There are 82mm and 82.5mm pistons available on the market to get you the extra capacity.

and dont forget to multiply the answer by 4 since u have 4 cylinders ;) ;)

So effectively the parts you are going to need are; pistons, sleeves & rods. I recommend the rods for piece of mind.

Now i havent specified a particular piston because your next question that you need to answer is whether you are going to stay N/A or if you are going to force feed the engine. If you decide to stay n/a then the higher compression pistons are a must have however if you are going to turbo it or super charge it then the lower compression pistons is what you are after. I wont dig into turboing or supercharging the 1zz as i think thats been done to death and the threads are plenty on here and on other forums. See some links below:

Thats sorted out the aspiration question and the bottom end. Now to the top end ..... the head .... ok there are a few variences of cams available for the 1zz and so depending on your application you would need to find the right one that applies

Would also recommend sorting out valves and valve springs especially if your looking to push that rev limiter out

The next piece is more a labour based task of porting and polishing the head ..... would get this done by the machine shop putting it all together for you and whom ever is going to do the boring and installing the sleeves.

Next is an engine management unit ..... some options are powerFC, adaptronic, hydra, haltech, motec ....... so yeah u have options and it really depends on what the tuner / workshop that is doing the work for you is comfortable with ...... before anyone asks no i wouldnt recommend a piggy back setup if your going to this extent with ur mods ..... might as well spend the extra cash and do it once and do it right.

If you decide to force feed then you will need to increase the exhaust size more than you would if you are going to stay N/A ..... also if your going to stay N/A then a set of headers will also be something to add to the list or you could just port match the stock ones and get them cleaned up.

Other bits and pieces which will push you towards a successful build will be getting all the ARP bits, looking at the fuel system being upgraded as a minimum bigger injectors if going F/I i dont believe the injectors are maxed out N/A so might have some room to move and the fuel pump. Would need a OEM gasket kit since the engine is coming apart. Other supporting bits which i discussed further in my f/i thread above are the supporting mods required to make the car driveable e.g. clutch, brakes, suspension work etc. All of which there is plenty of info to be found in this forum and on he net.

Now if you think all this is far too hard and far too expensive ..... dont get me wrong car modding isnt everyones cup of tea ..... then i have a simple recommendation for you if you are still looking to get a fast car ..... sell the corolla and get urself an evo or a wrx or a skyline etc as thats a far easier approach to performance for some.

Nice write-up Xoom,

as you may know, i have gone down the forced-induction path... however some things had to change in order for the car to run properly. Eg. I have changed the injectors and added a piggyback (which i saw you mentioned that if you ARE going to F/I, then do it once do it right applys here).

Also, the 1zz was never an engine designed to be making substantial amount of power, so if people are looking for a lot of power from their corolla, then the best option is to go a car that will keep you happy (as you mentioned, skyline, EVO, WRX, etc.)

... then again, there is nothing like hearing the sound of a turbo/supercharger coming out of, of all things, corolla XD :P
