  1. From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

Noel and Wes celebrate their win in Class A with the traditional bottle of bubbly Sydney Opera House finish line October 1976.
  2. How good is this? Could you buy a 2nd hand Corolla off a car yard in England, and drive it almost non-stop from London to Bombay and then from Perth to Sydney via the Gun Barrel Highway, up the Tanami via the Rabbit Flat Loop, down the dirt from Alice to Port Augusta then across to Cooma and back out to Temora, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Quilpie and back to Brisbane in fourteen days? Noel Richards and Wes Nalder did in 1976 and beat everyone in class A including the EU works rally cars. All we did to the engine was change the oil and filter, and dust out the air filter, several times in the 12000 km event. It took the likes of a Cowan driven 280E Merc factory sponsored to beat the Corolla. The Corolla ran a 1300cc 3K-B engine, a five speed box and some GT Celica wheels. The engine in the Merc was a closely guarded secret but we managed to get to see the twin cam 6 cylinder experimental model driving a five speed gearbox . COPYRIGHT S GREGORY 2006.

Another shot of the Class A winner a 1974, Toyota Corolla Sprinter of Nalder and Richards. Engine 3K-B twin carbies. Five Speed gearbox. Toyota City (York Motors) Kings Cross 1976. Without the service car a 1974 2000 GT Corona, it is unlikely that the Corolla would have made it to the finish line. The service crew had the ability to pick up flat tyres, broken parts and scout ahead of the rally to obtain much needed replacements and repairs. The longest driving stint was Alice Springs NT to to Port Augusta S.A. in 10 hours flat out down the dirt averaging over 100 kph.
  4. From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

Archived material showing winner of Class A a TOYOTA COROLLA driven by Wes Nalder (Nalders Toyota Stawell Victoria) and Noel Richards (ex HDT Racing Manager). On podium of York Motors in Kings Cross Sydney 1976.
  5. P51 Porsche ZF series gearbox using Brake band syncros Toyota 1973-1978. Ratios: W50/51 P51 (ex my japanese owners handbook 1976 and confirmed by Rivers in 2005). 3.287 3.525 First gear so the GT is slower in first. 2.043 2.054 Second gear maybe one tooth different. 1.394 1.396 Third gear really splitting hairs now. 1.000 1.000 Fourth. 0.858 0.853 Fifth gear. Flat out in NT the car would do exactly 200 kph at 6000 rpm. I found a fair P51 box which has allowed me to remove the old gearbox fitted by AMI to the GT in 1979 only to discover that they had replaced it with a P51 bless their hearts. Here is a pictoral event and repair time line. Q? is it a W50 or P51? We are about to find out. You can not tell from the outside, not a hope. ??? The big BOLT is the give away on the Countershaft, the W50 is not held on by a big bolt. Porsche type brake band for the syncro of gears. Reverse Idler and 5th/Rev gear/selection. (The rev idler is also different fitting). View with rear case removed. 5th/O/D ......> REV :::::>1st :>2nd:>3rd:>4th (lock shaft direct drive): Full case removed. Brake bands are viewable and could be seen through the drain hole with a stalk light. Cluster with bearings removed. Bellhousing will fit 18R and 20R (US SR5 Corona) TOP ROW Main Front: Main centre (identical) rear of housing. BOTTOM. Countershaft front, centre (OPEN) and rear of main case. Bearings are available in Australia for about $200 Gasket kit $110. Total rebuild cost about $350.00 Not bad considring the age. QED.
  6. Getting a badge off a grill is hard, I tried on my Camry and could not get it out without taking whole grill off. Grill's in Toyotas usually click and lock in with a tab. If they are stuck on you can use really thin plastic spatula (like yor Mom uses to clean the non-stick WOK) to prize them off without bending or breaking and then some marine based silicon glue as I did on a 280Z freshly painted. You could also search the Internet, there are advice pages on everything ever done here. The badge survives hand washing but not sure about pressure hose?
  7. Hi all, My 1974 RT104GT has a molded flush roof lining which is stuck to a firm backing shaped roof liner board. Glue is dry and the fabric a light vinyl has come away. I figure if I take out the centre light and OK consollette I can spray in a glue/contact adhesive with a long nozzle I should be able to glue the liner back onto the board and smooth out the wrinkles from centre to the edge. Q? What adhesive to use that doesn't dissolve the roof lining and which will stay wet long enough to smooth out all the wrinkles, as the roof lining will be sagged and larger than original. I will have to take the side moldings off so I can smooth it good, What glue? Anyone? View of centre roof fabric type third photo in first row.
  8. I have a couple of dizzys ex 18RG and as I am restoring my Corona GT I want to pull the points and fit a more reliable igniter assembly like fitted to the L28 datsun engine/Skyline L24's. I have photos of the 18RG Nippon Zdenso conversion but they are dated. The 18RG dizzy is different from the 18RC as the shaft is shorter and does not have the oil pump key/tongue. So a late Corona Celica dizzy wont fit. Anyone done the conversion and what did you use? Anyone got old 18RG bits around? Here are photos.

Sometimes you get lost even when a rally car.

The Rabbit Flat, Tanami desert Loop 1976. 24 hours Alice to Alice. The service car awaits the arrival of the Toyota Corolla driven by Nalder and Richards. The use of HF/RFDS radio was pivotal in co-ordinating pit stops and service for the Corolla which was a 3K-B model 1300cc engine, driven hard and fast, resulting in breakages and flat tyres.

    NSW Roads

From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

Half Mud. The rest impassable in the wet. See the tracks Bairdie, I told you the LSD was working. Anyone who thinks Toyota can't make an LSD think again. We did 100 miles of this road in these conditions and only fell off once.

    Rest stop

From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

The only time it was safe to stop on the Wilcannia Road was on the cattle grids otherwise you could not get traction again without sliding into a table drain. Gentle on the throttle or you would surely die.

    Bugger.

From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

How embarrassing, an SAL service crew needed help to be towed out. Using the HF radio the Ivanho policeman kindly consented to drive out the 100 miles towards Wilcannia and haul us out. Comments 'Just washed the bloody truck mate." it cost us more than a slab of beer!

    BUGGER!

From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

A couple inches of rain out near Ivanho/Broken hill and it all came to an end. LSD and M&S tyres had no hope. mud packed up under guards, car was like a sled on a mud pan. Just lost it going too fast on what seemed to be a firm section. it just started drifting and drifting and drifting and then it just stopped. **** happens!

Alice Springs following the Tanami Loop in 24 hours and a days welcome sleep. Did not even get to swim in the pool. With 24 hours lay ove the crews and drivers needed sleep. We thank Flag Inns for their service as nothing was too much trouble.

    Eat my Dust

From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

The view from the rear in any long distance rally, outback NT 1976 following the Corolla at speeds of up to 150 kph was a hard act to follow. You got really good at high speed driving on dirt and learnt the meaning of drifting at 120 kph around fast bends with rocks like marbles on the surface. This is a shot near Andamooka SA in daylight in October at 32 C.
  21. From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

The long and not so winding North/South unsealed road from Alice Springs to Port Augusta in 1976. We did 1000 km in 10 hours all dirt. Used all the onboard fuel and the reserve as well. Note the corrrrrrugations. No way slow or fast to avoid them and going around any bend at 120 plus you drifted , and drifted, and drifted. At the rally end the Corona side windows had etched lines from the constant dust and vibration. And sometimes you just had to stop to ease the driving stress from the constant jarring and corrugations.

Singapore Airlines Rally 1976 outback on the way back in the tanami Desert Loop from Rabbit Flat. long walk back if you run outa fuel. Service car awaits the Corolla to exit the Tanami Desert Loop from Alice to Yuendemu, to Rabbit Flat and Katherine. October 1976 temp 34 C.
  23. From the album: TOYOTA CORONA 2000-GT

Even RD Bridgestone Steel M&S blow out on NT roads. The $150 tyre was a write off. Pulling a fully laden GT up from 150 kph was not without its moments. The rear of the GT had four jerry cans and two spare tyres inside. Three fuel, 1 water. The rear seat area had a full axel assembly, a gearbox and a differential foamed into the floor area. The Corolla had the same. All wheels were four stud and interchanged. We ran with four blown tyres at one stage and no spares for either vehicle. The service car ran from Charleville to Brisbane with the rear window blown out by stones.
