  1. When petrol price or similar goes up and you don't have a choice.......thats rip off.

    Cheers

No thats a necessity and a fact of life we cant do with out! Remember Needs and Wants at school

  2. Yes they are a rip off just for a piece of molded plastic and metal

I like how people think that a bit of plastic and metal should cost $50 at Simsmetal rates. If it was such a rip off, an arc welder and a dremel can fix that.

Unfortunatley dont have either tool, so I had to pay the Toyota rate with out the labour rates! :spiteful:

  3. Update:

I priced a Hayman-Reece tow bar today, the dealer confirmed that they do in fact make the tow bars for Toyota Australia. Price quoted for the whole assembly, including wiring harness, fitting and lifetime warranty - $493

I may even find it cheaper, thats the first Hayman-reece dealer Ive been to.

I purchased my tow bar complete with new plastic molding from Toyota ( for trade price) for around $550 and fitted it one afternoon with a friend....Yes they are a rip off just for a piece of molded plastic and metal

  4. I was told my the defensive driving course (whose company started with an M....). I am not promoting them now since Kevin (whom I have known for a few years) is holding similar driving course. At least he is doing at lot of stunt courses

Having said that, it is common knowledge being pass on in any driving course I have been to.

The recommended psi is aimed for comfort. But for safety you should get the tyres up to 36 psi for city and 40psi for highway. The reason being that even the modern technology of our tyres, the side wall is still relatively weak. Strong side wall tyres (the one more hardcore then sports, say R spec *semi slick tyres) will have disadvantage of road noise. New compound and thread now make it much stronger than ever before, but it is still not a substitute of good old fashion air power. The increase pressure will in fact flatten the rubber in contact with the ground. Hence, there is more rubber on the road.

If you want observe it more closely. Spray a patch of water in your street outside (Government forbid it in Vic so you use your bath water to do that). Have the car with underinflated tyres (say 25psi). You will see the side of the tyres will imprint more water and the tract of water will show you that, after your Kluger went over the paddle of water. If you overinflate (say 50 psi), you will see more imprint in the middle. Yes it is very subjective still, but that is the theory.

The reason of why they recommend 40psi on the highway? Well during high speed crusing, the tyre will heat up no matter what. The pressure will increase at the same time, to the same level despite the different amount of air you have in your tyre (so they said it will roughly be at 44psi while crusing). The amount of heat you generate is somehow in relation (although may not be in portion) to the amount of air inside of the tyre. So more air inside, the cooler the tyre will be. Logical since more air to absorb heat.

I use that theory in my track driving as well. So after every session I went back to the pits. My wife and i will measure the tyre surface temperature with a laser gun. If it is too low (for my tyre it will be 65 degree for best grip), then I will lower the pressure to get more heat to the tyre. The converse is also true.

Sorry that it is a long post but I am sure I can keep going on here.

Also wheel alignment it also important but I am sure it is a different topic all together.

Done a couple of courses and track days, Higher is better I put 38-40 in because the wife will never check them and they can only loose air over time! Thats my theory anyway + you can corner more aggressively and hopefully not roll it like Wheels did :spiteful:

  5. VER 14 You finally now get the Lane Cove tunnel in Sydney. :yahoo:

As most have posted how limited the Factory unit is it has one big advantage on accuracy that the portable units can never have only if you had a car speed input from the main ECU which the Toyota has.

For those of you that are interested

This is really evident when going into a tunnel where normal portable GPS is lost with in a couple hundred meters or so, the Toyota uses something called dead reckoning which allows it to accurately plot on the map still when blind from Satellites, it does this with clever fuzzy logic software and the direct mechanical speed input that we all hate so much when it blanks out our LCD Displays when you go over 5 Kms/HR

My Grande got quite confused one time in a tunnel. The traffic had stopped due to a car broken down. After changing lanes twice at low speed the GPS lost its bearings and thought that I was creating my own tunnel under the city. It knew not to use the streets above.

It coorected itself quickly after leaving the tunnel.

VERY INTERESTING, not the norm in a tunnel.

Did you go below 5Km/hr or stop?

  6. Apologies for a topic snatcher... but what would be the best road (faster overall time) to get from Syd to Bri? Coast one or the country one? Will drive Kluger :D

    Thanks

Should have got the Gande with GPS  take the free way, Pacific hwy isnt it?

  8. Yep it can be done!

I Took the Kluger and Family off road at Easter to a little place which 99% of most people I have spoken to it about have never heard of before.

I went with some friends 6 cars in total from the AWD Club to a Place called Turon Gates near Capertee on the Mudgee rd from Lithgow if that helps.

We only drove it in and out with a box trailer attached on the 4X4 Only road, I went in other cars for the harder stuff (the Kluger would have made it through it all) as your car takes a beating and the boss (wife) doesn't want any undue scratches on it at this early stage of its life.

The down hill assist was great with the the stepper hills with the trailer adding more push than normal from behind, it makes a bit of a groaning noise when its working hard and releases when your on flat ground, very strange when you come to a down hill corner with a mound on it as it releases on the approach and comes on again once you go down the other side, if you know what I mean.

I have never tried it with out the traction control off so I cant comment, thats the light that activates when you have got the down hill assist on.

I was happy with its performance with what I would call very basic off road stuff add water and it would have been a different story.

  9. As I had said in another topic, I would fit Yokohama ADVAN ST V802 in size 255/55R19. They are only slightly larger, should fit and would be a much better tyre than the originals.

There is no other tyre in the size 245/55R19 other than the originals. Original tyres on new cars, other than performance models, are generally not very good and overpriced to replace as people buy them just because they are the same. On every car I have had, I've noticed a big improvement in grip and sometimes road noise after replacing the original tyres with something else. Better tyres don't generally last as long, but I think that safety is much more important than saving a little money.

All I can say after having the Advan's on the Subaru you don't need to look any further, in 17" they are +$275/corner when you can get them, How much are they for the 19"? So I can start saving now!

  10. This thread should be revived at least once a week to remind people of the dangers of computer controlled " safety " features in vehicles.

If I'm going to have a rollover, I would prefer it to be my mistake rather than the box full of Tandy Electronic bits that I don't even want in the vehicle.

Airplane passengers are assured of multiple backup systems in case of electronics failure. We car drivers only have seat belts.

I think the Troopys calling you?

The Bottom line says it all Taka, I reckon they will be fixed (re-calibrated) when they go in for a Toyota Service and we will not even know about it, wont stop the body roll but will help with the ant roll over, the new land cruiser has the same problem from a test I saw.

Kluger owners or potential buyers should not be alarmed or put off by any of this. We stand by our decision and would happily recommend this vehicle. Indeed, most drivers are extremely unlikely to encounter the same conditions that led to the rollover during a test on a closed dirt track.

Just don't drive like a maniac with a trailer on in the twisty stuff going up the Bell Road the wife gives greater pain

May be it rolled because it had no weight in it at the time! Funny how it corners better with a trailer in tow than not

  11. Works fine here but can be a pain, its easier to unlock from a distance if more people in the car, my wife drives me nuts using it instead of from a distance, I am left standing waiting for her to use it

    Works great for us both.

Has any one noticed if you walk past the car at night with the keys the lights sometimes turn on?

  12. I have to say, I agree with PC XT on this. I have people sail out in front of me all the time. Making (or trying to make) eye contact with the other party helps me decide in what to do next.

If someone is approaching a turn fairly fast, but they have their indicator on AND are looking at me, I feel confident to pull out in front of them.

Some people of course, just drive up the road with their indicator on... :whistling:

Thanks for the back up Scott, I was just having a rant at the time and possibly a bad day to go with it!

And if we are talking about Semi's, Minni's or Klugers they all have front side windows you DH!!!! Once you Tint the side glass to deadly illegal BLACK its also lets less light into the cabin, so its impossible to see the driver through the front window as well. Also snippers and police cant get a clean shot

    Adrian
