3rd Gear Synchro Gone

Recommended Posts

Hi there guys,

Was driving like an idiot over the weekend and shifted from 2nd in to 3rd too fast and now my 3rd gear synchro is gone (crunches every time from 2nd to 3rd).

To be able to shift into third without a crunch i would have to play games with my car and shift towards 5th and then direct it into 3rd otherwise it would be 2nd to 4th.

Has anyone in Melb had this replaced when NOT under warranty? if so, how much did it cost (not sure i really want to know reading from previous post of an estimated 1.5k damage). and where can i take it.

i would take it to my original mechanic but im not sure if he has dealt with corollas much and might take a bit of labour.

can anybody help?

Thanks

Fast gear changing wont break a syncro, lifting the clutch up to early might.

Someone on here is selling a whole engine plus gear box for 1.5k, maybe a better option plus you have some spare part from your original box and new engine for latter down the track.

So fixing up the gear synchro really does cost that much?

damn thats steep

Id say, you would probably cost you less labour hours to bolt in another box (prob can do it yourself if have the know how). Pulling a box apart to fix a syncro is messy and time consuming. Although you never know if the new box hasn't got the same problem. Sometimes it is better to work with what you have, since it can be less of a risk.

call up a gearbox specialist, if they've got the correct gear pullers they wont break 6th when it's removed either.

I'd expect the box reco to be about $600-900 depending on how many parts you replace, then the labour to remove and install the box, plus things like box fluid and new driveshaft nuts etc, so another $300-400 there.

A good site with a rundown on a rebuild of a C series box is http://www.ae92gts.com/ae92gts_trans_rb_1.html

That's on a C52 but the 6-speed is basically identical apart from the 6th gear.

Cool thanks for the tip gotta read up on it.

just a quicky. can the car still be driven for a while with the synchro screwed?

like if i just drove 1st 2nd and 4th would it be fine for a few weeks?

Yep, if you revmatch well you can use 3rd too, requires double clutching on the downshift to do perfectly though so no there's no synchro use. http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/howsyncro.htm

When you do it right it's like the box pulls the gear lever into the next gear

Ive had plenty of experience with this!

Around 1k will get your box like new again!

1k? which mechanics did you go to?

do you think just a local mechanic can do the same job or should i go visit a toyota specific mechanic?

I'd go to a transmission specialist, most mechanics will remove the box, then send it to a transmission specialist and add their cut.

I've had experience with this too, and it wil cost u basically 1k if only your 3rd syncro is gone, if other parts can cost more.

IMHO get it totally recon, caus when u pull apart a gb just to change one thing u might break another thing without knowing and put it back together

headach! and while your at it should look into a chutch and fly even maybe a lsd if ur rich ;D

I drove around for about a year when i first noticed my 2nd gear syncro crunching. ignored it went drags hit mountains lol.

about a year later went to fix it, 2nd gear syncro busted, 2nd gear was gone, first and reverse select sleve was gone too lol.

your lucky yours is 3rd gear its ****loads cheaper then 2nd gear.

geeze, i'm trying to save for a holiday + my birthday now i have to save for this!

Total recon will be very costly for this right?

so you can still drive the car hard even if the gear crunches? i've been driving like a baby because i didn't wanna screw it even more.

Spewing because i had a SSS wanting to drag at the lights last night.

the crunching is the gear teeth, you dont want to crunch it too much otherwise you'll be needing more than a syncrho replacement.

Revmatching and double clutching will reduce the amount of crunching.
