Corolla TRD Short Shifter Installation

1. Pull out the ashtray and unscrew the gear knob:

2. Pull out the gear panel and unplug the cigarette lighter or start button.

3. Unscrew the 2 screws circled in RED.

4. Unscrew the 2 screws in the center console.

5. Pull out the panel under the hand break. You’ll need this pulled out so you have enough room for the hand break to take out the whole center console.

6. This is what it looks like without the center console.

7. Pull out the pin from the selecter cable. Note how this pin is placed.

8. Pull out the selecter cable.

9. This is a bit tricky if you have thick fingers. You need to push out both sides of the pin and then push down to release the shift cable.

10. Behind both selecter cables there’s a knob that you have to twist all the way to the left to release it from the shift assembly.

11. Side by side comparison of the stock (left) and the TRD SS (right).

12. Unscrew the 4 screws from the shifter assembly THEN turn it on it’s side and take out the cables that’s attached to the right side of the shifter assembly. You can’t just pull them off. You’ll need a small screwdriver and push the pins from the bottom in before pulling them off.

13. Install the TRD SS and remember how to put everything back.

Should take about 45mins to an 1 hour to install.

If you want you can spray some Lithium Grease on the ball joints.

It’s about $6.20 from Bunnings. It comes in a spray can.

14. The final product.

This is what it looks like with the TRD gear knob installed.

15. This is what it looks like with your original gear knob installed.

I’ll let you decide which one looks better.
