Steering Rack Replacing

Recommended Posts

why do you need to replace the rack?

rack ends etc can be replaced with the rack in the car.

If you need to replace the rack because it's leaking, drain the PS fluid, disconnect the lines, disconnect the steering shaft from the rack at the knuckle, disconnect the ball joints from the hubs, remove the bolts holding the front and rear engine mounts to the subframe, support subframe with jack towards the rear, unbolt the two nuts and bolt at the base of each hub,, remove exhaust mid section after removing oxygen sensor, undo the three bolts holding the front of the subframe to the lower radiator support, undo the rest of the bolts holding the subframe to the chassis and lower it down.

Unbolt rack from the subframe, install new rack and then assemble car in reverse of the dissasembly.

what's wrong with the actual rack? It's pretty rare for the rack to need replacing unless it's been in an accident big enough to stuff the pinion etc. The $40 rack ends usually bend before the actual rack gets damaged.

If one end is loose, it's just the rack end... Pretty easy to replace, just need some big spanners, 27mm, etc...

Pull off the wheel, undo the tie rod, pull it out from the hub, unwind the tie rod end, count the number of turns so you don't need a Wheel Alignment with the new one, pull the rubber dust boot off and replace the rack end...
