Something to do with oscillating frequency's to enhance or cancel out sound??

put simply a resonator is used in an exhaust system to try and make it more quiet ...... as indicated above it does this by oscallating the sound waves so that they cancel each other out ..... now if ur car is running a stock exhaust there is no need for u 2 get one ...... if ur running an aftermarket exhaust and its just to loud then head down to any reputable exhaust shop and they should be able to help u out ...... no it is not a performance part.
