Which oil is recomended ?

Hi all, i want to change the oil in my mothers car, its a 1989 -90 camry 4 cyl, i don't have a manual to refer to.

Do you mean Penrite oil ? i really meant what grade , like 20 / 50, what does Camry recommend in workshop manuals.

i use shell 20/50 which is just the normal stuff most people use in a normal car, nothing special and it does the job

I have a '91 celica which has the same engine (5s-fe, just check to make sure tho) and I use 10w-40 as per recommended in the manual. 20w-50 to me sounds rather thick, though x-40 or x-50 is definitely the way to go for older engines (where x is the first number).

Anywhere around these numbers is fine.

I guess it depends on how many kms the lil beast has done. I run 10w-40 Castrol Magnatec but being she's near 20 years old, the 20w 50 might be a bit of a goer. Might help getting an additive put in to help with the age of the engine (some of the Nulon and Wynn's stuff is good... can coat the engine and can sorta still run it for a lil while without oil from what a mate has done - not recommded though lol)

I had my 94 Camary for 14 years & the Toyota dudes put GTX2 in it. So I stayed with that with no probs.

Thanks everyone for replies, the motor is in top nic, its only done 135,000 easy klms, doesn't use any oil or anything between services, still runs like new. i haven't had a chance to get the oil or filter yet, i appreciate all your replies, cheers.
