Hi People,

I've recently purchased a 97 corolla hatch second hand and the water hoses into the cabin for the heater core were disconnected (the core was leaking apparently). The carpet under the passenger side at the front is horrid it stinks even when it's dried out. On top of that those black round seals on the floorpan also seem to bringing in water in from the outside (not 100% that all the water is coming from there).

What can I do with the carpet? is it a total write off? Should I try and track down replacement floor carpet from a wrecker somewhere (I'm in Cairns). I've attempted to clean the carpet myself but without much success. The underlay stuff looks to be totalled.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Reef.

Gday Mate

My car just got water in so wat i did was took all the carpet out and let it hang and drip dry for a few days and if you can lye it in the sun. But if you cant just get the your mums or misses hairdryer onto it, and the smell might go away if it dosent you could always spray some furnishing spray that you use around the home that makes a nice smel that is wat i used, you just have to make sure that layer of carpet stuff underneith is completly dry, let it dry for a few days to a week. But if it is completly stuffed you could try and find some but i dont no how easy that would be to find in good condition just try drying it 1st.

And for the rubber seals on the floor plan i dont think that could be it but just check if you can while the carpet is out of the car, and if it is use a silicon around the plug to give it a extra seal, but just make sure that water leak is not coming from the a/c hose cause that can block up and it can build up in the a/c behind the dash and start poring out, or the hose is going out to the engine bay cause it can be easly kicked and will leak into the passanger footwell.

Good luck man and i hope you work it out.

Thanks heaps for the quick reply.

I'll endeavor to get the carpet out of the car and clean and dry it and leave it out for a week at least.

About the seals, I noticed there is a little bit of water on the floor after it rains (under the carpet. Great idea to do leave it out and finally find these leaks.

How hard is it to remove the floor carpet? I gather I need to remove the front seats to do so. Is this a hard job? do you possibly have any tips?

Cheers mate.

you have to remove all the seats, center console, foot rest etc to get the carpet out, fairly long job.

The water in the car when it rains is most likely from a leaking windscreen.

Managed to get it all out today, the carpet underlay stuff is really bad. Think I need to replace it, it's black! At least now I should be able to find where the water is coming in.
