2001 Sportivo Corolla LE

I have a 2001 Corolla Sportivo (the gold limited edition) and the turbo has chucked it in big time. The local Toyota Dealer tells me it will be at least $6k for a new one and because no one has the parts available, it can't be rebuilt. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas of where I can get the Turbo fixed or a replacement at a reasonable price. The car has done 100,000km and hasn't missed a beat but I can't afford $6k to get it back on the road. I'm in Melbourne Eastern Suburbs and would really appreciate any advice...

If the turbo has packed it in then surely the car is not stock...? Also I can't see a replacement turbocharger alone costing $6000... Is that the full story? Why not do some research and see what other turbochargers you could fit with the least modification?

The car is original as far as I know as I bought it from the Dealer as new. I believe there is only 100 of them ever made. I'm only going off what the dealer has told me about the $6k so am just starting to look at what I can do. He told me that the parts were not available for the original turbo so I if wanted a new one it would cost $6k. I have left the car at the dealers for now and will pick it up later in the week and see if anyone else can rebuild it. I think that's the full story. Was wondering why you said it can't be stock if it packed it in? It started making horrible noises when the Mrs was driving it and that was the end of it..

I just expected that it would last longer than 100,000kms under normal driving conditions, didn't you??? I guess all they ever did was slap a turbo on the side of the economy engine anyway, it was never great engineering from Toyota :(

My suggestion is that if you can get the part number off the turbo then you can order it from a turbocharger supplier and have it fitted by whoever you wish. I can't see it being some super-rare, one of a kind, limited edition turbocharger, used solely for this application. Genuine servicing/parts is notorious for its premium pricing strategy, yet the quality of work doesn't seem to correspond to the bottom line. Is there a particular reason why you are having it mended at the dealer (i.e. extended warranty)?? I would prefer to take it to a specialist mechanic, or at least get yourself a second opinion.

For 6k, one could argue that rebuilding the motor even stronger and setting it up better for f/i is better than spending 6k on a turbo alone :\

Plus you'd get more power out of it perhaps.

It started making horrible noises when the Mrs was driving it and that was the end of it..

i'm no turbo expert but it sounds like your turbines are stuffed and spiting little pieces of metal everywhere, could go into your intercooler and to your engine... thats where the big money is...

the problem is that your car is so rare that there is no after market parts for it... (this is one reason i didn't buy it.. and also cause not many other cars use the same engine..)

6K for a turbo is way too much...

i think you should take your car to a good work shop that has a name for it self and get things custom made to get the engine rebuilt... this may cost you about 5-6k but your engine will be stronger and more powerful, and more reliable..

i'm from the westside of melbourne so i don't know very many workshops on your side but you should try AVO. its some where on the eastside.. (i'll see if i can found out for you)

they make everything in house and they are turbo experts... ;)

mate if its just the turbine thats dead then i highly doubt its a $6K job ...... im not sure about make/model of turbo or specs that goes into the 7afte so i cant recommend if there is a garret straight swap ...... did they simply say its gonna cost $6k for turbo + install ?

I'd talk to Garret about a replacement. Even if they have to put different flanges on one of their turbos it will cost a lot less than $6k.

What is the stock turbo on the old AE112s? IHI?
