ECT & O/D

Hi Guys,

I do believe i know what they both do, ECT holds the gear in a bit longer and basically gives the car a more "Sporty" Feel and O/D basically gives the car one less gear..

What i actually want to know is, what is the most fuel sufficent to have on? ECT off and O/D On.. or what?

I have a Toyota Camry Vienta Ultima 95

ECT OFF is best for gas mileage, as it shifts at lower RPM's, hence using less gass.

O/D ON for sure uses less gas, as 4th gear is overdrive. So while on the highway, it keeps the RPM's lower. If you turn O/D off, it will keep the car in 3rd gear, putting out much higher RPM's extreamly reducing the gas mileage.

if you're doing city/urban driving (being 60km/h or less) it won't make any difference to your fuel consumption whichever mode you're in, as your car will pick any gear up to 3rd anyway. it's at cruising speeds where it will make the most difference. the higher the gear ratio the better

I never take the car off ECT... don't need the power :P LOL

But yeah... as everyone's mentioned, O/D is 4th gear... best to use O/D if you're cruising anything over 60km/h. You'll find it won't kick in til the engine's warmed up, and normally won't change to 4th until you hit 70km/h anyway. Once it's warm, it'll drop into 4th at 60-65km/h and rpm will be around 1500.

They REALLY need a 5th gear for anything over 100km/h... I don't like travelling at 3k rpm at 110 :( the 5 speed manual does the same rpm at 110 too!! Meh

Here's an example of what the car does if it's in 3rd gear (O/D off) at high speed. If it was in 4th gear, the RPM's would be extreamly lower. Actually, I guess to add to everything else, the lower RPM's is also better for the car's reliability and wear. :)

Damn LOL ,my Gen4 5 speed does 130km at 3K rpm :P

Must be the gen3 gearbox that runs so high :(

The US gas ratings use different numbers, even though it;s the same as yours. The US 87 gas is the same as your 91, the US 93 gas is the same as your 97/98. I used to use US 93 for my V6 untill gas started going up, then started to use 87. I HAVE to use 91 or higher now because I have a Supercharger. A lot of the US uses E10 (10% ethanol) gas, and you don;t have a choice. Many states here ONLY sell E10, and you can't get anything else. But even though it's E10, we still use the same octane ratings when filling up.

Nah, that was when my car was stock, before I had engine work, lol. It hink it can do 120-125mph stock in 3rd (4 speed Auto). But yeah, the RPMs are a hell of a lot lower at that speed in 4th (overdrive) gear, lol.
