How to install a beverage holder if you dont have one

I was really sick of bottles rolling around the floor of my car, sagging the back of the seat pocket or dropping from the seat.

As toyota did'nt bother putting one in the 95-96 camry, I had to work out a way of doing it myself.

Here's what I came up with.

First I found a suitable after market drink holder,

I got mine from Super Cheap, its by "Touring Items - Type S" drink holder.

its good for this application as it has a sliding brace on the bottom to tilt it vertical.

remove any mounting clips from the back of the cup holder but keep the sliding brace on the bottom in place.

Next, slide your passenger seat all the way forward, (I mounted it on the passenger side of the center console to keep away from my legs).

This way you will see where to mount it so it wont stop the seat in the future.

slide the seat back all the way to give yourself more room.

position the cup holder where you want it but make sure the sliding brace is still on the plastic of the console & not resting on the carpet.

With a texta, mark 2 points thru the back holes in the cup holder on to the center console plastic carefully.

Mark them horizontally & at the outside edge of each hole.

take away cup holder & check texta marks are even on the horizontal plane.

Now for the next bit you will need a flat head screw driver about 3-4mm width,

you will also need a butane torch or lighter, somthing with an intense gas flame.

Heat up the tip of the screw driver just a little hot at first to make a guide mark if you like,

then very hot, not glowing red, but very very hot.

Now, very carefully. plunge the hot tip of the screw driver horizontally into the mark on the console.

if you take your time & do it carefully, you will end up with a neat hole just the size of the screw driver tip.

Reheat before doing second hole.

Gently trim excess plastic away with a stanley knife.

Then the tricky bit.

Get some fairly long 3-4mm wide cable ties, good quality ov course.

Start from a down ward angle, & insert the cable ties thru the holes you just made, push them thru to the bottom of the side of the console.

you will have to slide your fingers up under the plastic of the console from the side, you may need long nose plyers.

they should now be sticking into the holes with their loops up & the points peeking out from the side of the console above the carpet.

Make sure you have the sliding brace set to keep your drink upright,

attach drink holder with cable ties thru the holes on the back of the drink holder.

secure loosely to check fit then tighten up for finish.

Now you can have refreshment at hand & out of the way at the same time.

Cheers,

Brentan,

Torque.

Dunno, mines a gen 3 from 96, no cup holders in in mine.

maybe the top of the range had one that pops from the dash above the radio?

Where are they located in your pezzaz car?

Cheers,

The parents one is a base-spec CSi, facelifted model SDV10, and the cup-holders are just beneath the ash-tray (from memory, haven't been in it for ages)

Quite possibly in this location

Done some searching (looking at cars on eBay seems to be the best way of finding dash photos), seems like maybe it's only the facelifted models (ie the one without the Camry or Vienta between the tailights) which have the cup-holders under the ashtray, earlier models just have a bigger storage "dish" bit

Here's another

The cup holders came with any model... depends on what the original owner wanted. These were an optional extra from the showroom floor.

I have the 1995 Touring Series and I DIDN'T EVEN GET ANY!! NOR CRUISE CONTROL!! Whereas the 96 Tourer got the Cruise Control, but still didn't have the Cup Holders.

There were the "Getaway" Series and the likes... one-off trims that got added extras, I know the Getaways had the Cup Holders as stock standard.

I'm gonna try and source some of these from a wrecker or Ebay... I would LOVE some cup holders :P

Good idea, wonder how hard it will be to retro fit 'em.

I'd be guessing you just swap the consoles over, shouldn't be too hard (although in saying that, to get to the front part of the centre console in my AE102 requires taking the entire lower dash out, but it's just screws and clips, nothing fiddly)

I went to the Wreckers... got mine :P

I'll post up the pics when it's installed :)

Did you have to grab the whole center console or does it just mount under the ash tray?

Didn't HAVE to take the whole centre console, he couldn't be ****d taking it out, so I took the whole thing :)

There's a couple of screws that screw into the back that hold it to the chassis of the console that you can undo and place onto your own centre console, so I'm gonna give that a shot this arvo if I have a spare minute... just gotta find my screwdriver!

Mine is exactly the same as the one pictured before. There are the two prongs that come down to support the can/cup whilst it's in the holder... when you push it in, they fold back up into the ring itself so it only takes up about 1 inch of space above the compartment in the console there.

Well... I got the cup holders installed, also replaced the stabilising engine mount too - was totally stoofed :P

You'll notice that the cup holder colour is different to the rest of the console... I'm gonna try and paint it black when I get a chance. The Touring colouring inside is quite nice :P

Also... you'll notice the O/D button is also located on the right side of the shifter... gotta love leather!!
