Brake pads worn out more on one side

Hi all,

I've noticed that both pads on drivers side are almost gone, while the other side has about 40% remaining.

Checked the calipers, are freely moving, there is plenty of grease on bolts, piston seals OK no leaks.

Car's braking behavior is quite normal and it doesn't pull to one side. So what could be the problem?

Sometimes you can experience slightly more wear towards the side that has the most weight if your car usually only has you in it. This is only minor wear though and shouldn't be that extreme.

The most common cause of uneven wear like that is that your drivers side calliper may not be sliding as freely as the passenger side. You said you checked to see that everything is sliding fine though, so this leaves one more possible cause.

When was the last time you bled your brakes? If there is uneven pressure in the system (passenger side receiving less than the drivers side), you can get un-even wear like that.

I would personally just change your brake pads, fully bleed your brakes, make sure everything is well lubricated, then keep an eye on it from there.

i agree with DJKOR. however, even though it may seem like it, the calipers may not be sliding freely. i'd recommend taking them apart, cleaning up the slides, and re-greasing them. over years of wear (depending upon the quality of the grease originally used on the slides), the grease on the caliper slides may appear watery, which means it has melted and isnt lubricating properly. this can cause the caliper to seize up and start binding the pads on the disc rotor = uneven pad wear.

however, a minor servicing of the brakes, including pad replacement, bleeding, etc. should rectify your problems.

Some cars just happen to wear out unevenly, Camry's do it, thats why they've released special brake pad kits to wear evenly...

But as has been stated, re-grease the caliper slides and make sure they are all moving freely...
