Pre-Cats

Prior to me buying my 2001 Spyder, I was very paranoid about this thing called a Pre-cat which I thought was specific to the Spyders.

I had read about it on the Spyderchat forum and a lot of people have said its a bad bad thing which can cuase your engine to die.

I have since consulted several people including TRD and the exhaust specialist and they have told me the following:

1. They have never heard of ceremics from pre-cats getting sucked into the engine because the engine blows air out through its headers and not suck it in.

2. If there have been cases of pre-cat failure around the world, its very minimal and it probably happened to those people who have spent time and money trying to modify their Spyders and if i keep mine stock, then I will be ok.

3. Just about every car on the road has the 2 stage catalytic converters, first stage being pre-cats so if it hasnt happened to so many cars then its not likely to happen to my Spyder.

4. As someone who has studied consumer law at university, under the Trade Practices, if there was a chance of ceremics fracturing, and it could possibly happen, and it does then Toyota could possible be liable under the trade practices act of fitness for purpose and negligence because if it had any chance of damaging the engine then toyota should not have used it and/or made a mass vehicle recall to rectify the issues with these pre-cats.

As such, I intend to enjoy my car and stop trying to baby it.

I would like to invite any feedback form anyone who has any experience of knowledge of these pre-cat issues

I think somebody is having you on. There isn't any reversion into your engine, let alone the fact you won't get a piece of ceramic cat up into there through the ports. I have occasionally seen cats melt, but all that ends up with is them blowing straight out the exhaust.

Most cars these days have dual-stage cats, so if it was an issue you would think it has happened before...

are pre cats bad.......yes

should you listen to spyder or toyota... really up to u

the problem is that the pre cats break up and blocks the exhaust system, its like holding ur breath with minium air

mate its ur choice if u want to leave them in their, from expierence its a common problem, you just havent done much research

cheers

Well I think they're a bunch of idiots :P Think about it logically, say one of your pre-cats did melt or break apart, which way is it going to go?

During the initial low revs there is a bit of backflow..... but Toyota is supposed to have a 10yr warantee on emissions...so if your precats fail and kill the engine...then u get a brand spanking new engine.
