RT132 Idling: What is this sound?

Hi all,

My partner's RT132 (81) Corona Liftback has started making a rattling noise at idle. When you bring the revs up it is less apparent. It sounds like it could be in the valve gear. I bought a new valve cover gasket so I could pull it off and check/adjust the valves and reassemble everything. Any tips, opinions or advice would be appreciated. Motor is 18R-C.

Have a look and a listen here:

Thanks!

Nick

Hi Nick,

If that thing has a timing chain I would be looking at the tension. some use engine oil pressure and a ratchet, hence the reduction when the engine is run faster and oil pressure increases.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I was a bit worried it might be that. It does have a timing chain but I'm not sure how to make sure the tension is correct or how to adjust it. It looks like a motor out job. I wonder if it is just harmless racket!
