On the topic of removing drive shafts…

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can someone please express their opinion in detail on removing drive shafts from the 1ZZ-FE manual transmission found in the ZZE122 make corolla.

I have read about mixed opinions in using prying bars, hammers and screw drivers as chisels and would like a definitive opinion which works with success from you guys.

Thanks in advance; Any help appreciated.

ZZE.

I've done more than I can count...

-De-stake the driveshaft nut and remove it, get a block of wood and a mallet, knock the end of the driveshaft in towards the box to break the splines free from the hub.

-Remove the two nuts and one bolt from the joint at the bottom of the hub assembly to the A-arm

-Push the A-arm down away from the studs on the hub assy, then swing the hub assembly out and off the end of the driveshaft.

-After the gearbox oil is drained, there's a couple of ways to remove the shafts...

-Use a large flatblade screwdriver and a mallet to knock the shaft out by knocking on one of the flat ridges of the inner CV housings (drivers side shaft is difficult to get the right angle to knock out this way)

-Use a prybar and piece of wood on the diff housing to lever the shaft out. This is the easiest way if you have the right shaped/thickness prybar and the right thickness piece of wood to protect the alloy diff housiing.

The trick I've found to be able to knock them out easily is to get a second person to hole the hub out of the way while also holding the shaft level to the ground, when the shaft is level to the ground it's always easier to knock out of the box.
