Hi,

I had the aircon going most of the weekend i've noticed that sometimes something in the engine bay is rattling.

It isn't happening all the time and is doing it with both the clutch in and out, as soon as the aircon goes off the noise goes, turn it back on sometimes its back sometimes its not it will randomly come and go.

Anyone had this issue? Its really annoying me and I want to fix it ASAP.

Cheers

It is a click type noise that usually follows with a buzzing type of sound?

Chances are, the sound you are hearing is the electric clutch engaging on the A/C compressor and/or the A/C compressor itself.

Slow down tiger !

1st. Clutch? As in gb clutch? Forget clutch has nothing to do about ac rattle unless it's the compressor clutch!

2nd. Is the rattle only there when ac is on? Ie ac clutch compressor engaged ?

3rd. When did u last get a ac service? This involves a gas leak check, regas and change of oil ( yes ur ac has oil which lubricates moving parts ie compressor ) and a change of reciever drier

If ac compressor is noisy when operating more than likely it's low on oil ( yes it takes oil, which is usually checked at ac service ( not at a corner servo ) ) and compressor may of had it ! Dnt leav it for too long or can damage tx valve

Thanks,

I had a rattle on my old bmw which was making a noise it was the throw bearing but i've ruled that out.

Yes the rattle is only when the compressor is on (with the fan only it doesnt do it) it doesnt do it all the time so it looks like it could be the oil.

I've had the car 3 weeks and an old guy owned it before me so im assuming never.

I should prob add the aircon is very very cold still and seems to function fine apart from the noise.

Just had it checked.

Mechanic said 90% sure its the front bearing.

Just rang a couple of places. One place straight out said change the compressor and its going to be $800-1400

Another place said if its only the front bearing it'l be $165 if its the compressor between $380 and $700.

Does this sound about right?

Anyone know of any decent places in the strathfield or botany area?
