hey,

i was accelerating the other day n noticed some black smoke from the exhaust pipe as the revs got higher. as soon as i saw it i backed off.

i never drive the car hard and the engine was warm when it was done.

some of my mates are saying the cars running rich but im not too sure.

would it be the fuel - 98 BP Ultimate,

or the engine oil - can't remember

or because the inside of the exhaust pipe is dirty.

or something else altogether

thanks

Most engines run a little rich at the top end for protection, though usually not rich enough to be smoking. Is your engine modified in any way? A practically complete list of things that can cause rich running would be: a dirty or malfunctioning sensor (eg: O2, MAF, coolant temp, air intake temp), poor ignition from worn ignition components, a fuel regulation problem, a significant exhaust leak before the O2 sensor, base ignition timing wayy off or a bad ECU (roughly in order of likelihood).

i wouldnt say its smoking, just a little black smoke from the back end when the revs are getting up there.

it also may have needed to warm up a little bit more too.

i've read when ur running rich, the fuel is not burning as efficiently but i still get over 600km with hitting lift almost every day

plus it doesnt always happen

will the temperature of the day matter at all???

The temperature of the air does affect the stoichiometry of the burn, but it is taken into account by the ECU which adjusts the amount of fuel accordingly (unless, of course, there's something wrong with the sensors, the computer or the fuel regulation).

Engines are typically most fuel inefficient when not at operating temperature. If it wasn't completely warmed-up, the computer might've decided to dump fuel into the chambers to safeguard against damage at the high RPM. I'm not sure whether that's actually the case, but it's plausible given what you've described.
