Hello,

In the last 6 months I bought a new car, (2009 Mazda 6)

And my Aurion has mainly been sitting around the house, driven probably once, twice a week.

It has developed a cold hard starting problem where it may take a second or more than usually to start.

and just this morning when i started it, it felt like the engine may have been misfiring on 1 cylinder that went away after about 5-10 seconds (felt the engine through the chassis)

Its fine after its been warmed up. (starting)

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks.

Sounds like it is moping around because you bought a Mazda. Poor Aurion just wants some attention... Can't blame it for feeling like **** if you replaced it with someone inferior.

It's like telling your ex your dating someone 50kg fatter than them.

Haha! I knew that reply would come sooner or later! I love the Aurion, beautiful car for driving (especially long distances, overtaking). Its just time to move on.

And now its getting where I need to sell it and fix this problem before I do!

Whats the mileage on the Aurion? Fouled Plugs? Check all the ignition wiring as well to make sure they're all properly plugged in.

I've had a Camry, Starlet and Echo that all have done exactly the same thing, sounds like it's chugging

I found that I could almost guarantee all three cars would do this in two situations.

1). When I start them and move them around the driveway, ie engine only on for <60sec and then let them sit. On restart some hours later, they would always do the whole miss thing for 30 sec or so.

2). If I didn't start them for a while, ie >2-3 weeks.

As for why, well I don't know for sure. The above vehicles all had > 150k each so the rings may have been showing signs of wear. I put it down to rings not having been lubricated sufficiently on startup and therefore maybe poor compression one one cylinder until everythiing was coated adequately in lubricant.

In your case, it sounds like fouled plugs.

Combined with blowby (through the age of the engine) and not getting the engine hot enough (by a less than 60second drive), the plugs get fouled.

Ideally, even if it isn't your primary car - you should aim to get it out for a good drive at least once a week. Driving only a short distance, especially when it doesn't run until it's operating temperature will cause the engine to very quickly foul the plugs, and likely get a heavy carbon buildup. This is simply because when a car is cold, fuel does not vaporise from the injectors all that well, and will instead just condense on the cylinder walls rather than burning cleanly. In addition, some cars (not sure if the Aurion does this) also run the engine quite lean after this point until the engine warms up; as running an engine lean produces more heat.

I drive my Aurion to a station every day, approx 20 mins, and even then it only *just* warms up about 1km from the station. If I continue the same schedule for a week or so, it tends to be running a bit rough by the end of the week - and does slightly feel like it is misfiring at idle (just the vibration and it feels like it is kicking just slightly). I just give it a good run on a freeway for a while, open up the throttle for a bit when possible and by the time I am back home, it is running perfectly again.
