RAV4 V6 intermittent start-up noise

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue in the past.

As soon as the engine starts up, there is an immeidate dry rattle noise for about a second.

This doesn't happen all the time, just on the odd occassion and seems to happen even if the car is hot or cold.

I recently had the car in for a service at Toyota and advised them of the noise but they couldn't reproduce the problem.

Just wondering if anyone might know what this noise could be.

Where can you hear the rattle? In the engine bay or inside the cabin?

My V6 Tarago does the same thing! Its driving me mad! I cant replicate the issue when I need to - it is intermittent. Have you been able to solve your issue yet? Please do let me know.

You guys should search the Aurion forum for "VVT-i rattle". You may learn a thing or two about the cause of this.

Hi guys, what you describing is definitely a VVT-I rattle.

Only happens on " cold start " which is why the technicians can't replicate the issue.

Best way is to leave it over night and start it up in the morning and you'll definitely hear it.

I suggest you leave the car over night at a dealership and tell them to check for noise first thing in the morning.

I'm a Toyota technician and I repair many of these vvti rattles.

If your vehicle is still under warranty I highly recommend you take this to your nearest dealership ASAP for repairs.
