Hi Guys,

Not sure if you guys can help me out but i recently purchased a second hand Aurion SX6 (2010) and i've noticed that when the car is hot (driving for approx 20mins) the car would idle very roughly. The car feels as if everything is shaking. I have asked toyota to check this out for me but they explained that everything is fine and no eror codes are in the car.

I have used 98 octane (v-power) for 3 tanks and also asked Toyota to clean the fuel injector cleaner so im assuming its not the fuel or injectors. I have also just done the 45K service but nothing appears to be wrong. Could you guys give me some advice ?

* If i shift the gear in neutral there is no rough idle at all (900 rpms) but in drive gear (approx 600 - 700rpm) not sure if this is how low its supposed to be

I thought it could be the electrical fuses, so i opened those up and found that a missing 20AMP fuse was missing. I looked on the lid of the electrical box and it listed it as an AMP, im assuming it maybe for an aurion amp system ?

Regards

Able to get a video of it at all? If its noticeable enough to catch on video. I know mine sort of vibrates when going from park or neutral to reverse or drive, being that the trans is under slight load and unable to exert it when its stationary (normal for an auto)

Posted

Its more the feel of the vibration, can't really see anything vibrating in the car, so not sure what i should be recording. The rpms isn't fluctuating either.

Open the bonnet up with a camera phone recording while she's on. handbrake on move it from N to D so we can hear the difference.

Is that from a cold start?

If I get time I'll record mine (as its a bit noisier then when I first got the car) to compare the sound.

The engine was hot when i recorded this video, whens its cold i don't get the rough idling however once the engine is driven for around 15mins thats when it starts to get rough.

Hmm I think I'm having a similar issue. I'm going to upload a vid tonight, will post it in the morning.

added: yours has a pretty deep throaty noise to it, mine doesn't have that. (uploading now)

oh gosh, hope im not having too severe engine problems. Not exactly having a good run with the service agent either...

btw thanks for helping me out, much appreciated. Forgot to add i did ask the service person (who took the car for a drive) yesterday and he said it was driving like all normal aurions and that if there was something wrong then the check engine light will be up.

Some reason i don't believe him, as ive driven heaps of cars but this particular aurion seems to idle unusally.

That's mine, hmmm is yours the lower note noise?

After a 15min drive.

Both engines don't sound too healthy how many kms they done, has the noise always been there?

Posted

lol, yours sound louder then mine.. do you have the suction noise near the right side as well ?

My car is sitting on 49 000 kms atm

Posted (edited)

I don't recall any suction noise. It's gradually been getting louder in the last 3months or so. Been a few road trips since then as I moved from Adelaide to Canberra.

My car is at 92,000. (Mind you the last 15000km have been done in the last 3 months since moving.)

Mine could also sound a bit louder 'cause I'm using a directional condenser mic to record it :( I can barely hear it if im in the car, unless it's a cold start, then it's pretty loud. (windows up, music off) There's also no loss in power, or any strange engine movement (if that helps!)

hmm maybe ill bring it to my local mechanic and see if its anything major in regards to the suction noise.

In the car, i cant hear anyhting either but just the rough idle when its in D but in N. What revs does your car drop down to when in D gear compared to N on a warm engine ?

Posted

Yeah that's a normal drop though. Its like slipping the clutch in a manual with the handbrake on.

600-700rpm in N.

400-500rpm in D.

I may have also found a pattern with the rough idle being more noticeable using E10 rather than my usual BP Ultimate. I will confirm this after my drive home in a couple of hours.

Posted

Yeah definitely fuel issue I reckon! About 70% less noise after 30mins+ on BP Ultimate.

Posted

hmm at least thats good news for you. The only thing is i've been running 98 octane for several tanks now (V-power) and just recently filled in a tank full of BP ultimate. Still feel no difference though,, the idle is still about the same roughness.

Just an idea, is it possible to have a mechanic bring the revs up when in D, i feel that if i bring the rev to around 800 then the idle will be smooth as. However i believe that this will cause issues in the long run if the revs are maintned this high ?

Posted

No idea but seems more like an ECU thing. I had a family car converted to LPG once and it ran low revs when cold, had to get it tuned to fix the issue.

Also my rev estimates were way off.

N ~850rpm

D ~700rpm

Could it be the VVTI issue that's well known on this forum?

Posted

hmm im really not sure whats wrong with it but when i consulted the toyota mechanic he said everything was fine so not sure what i should be checking. I think ill just pass it onto a local mechanic and have the car diagnosed by someone other then toyota lol. Ill update this post once i get a response. Thanks alot Brad for your troubles and helping me with my situation, Cheers Buddy !

Yeaahhhhhh don't really trust the Toyota guys much myself! Good luck on it and keep us posted! Might end up asking them to check it on my car too next time she's in!

Thanks for the updates!!!!

ok so ive got an update, i changed my fuel to 95 (Shell) to see if the problem got worst and boy did it become horrible. The car vibrates like no tommorow and gets so annoying that i throw it into N just to make it stop. But even in N now it seems to be virbrating a little bit.

So know that i know its the fuel causing this problem. Is there anything you can reccomend to use to help clean my fuel tank and fuel lines ?

Posted

Try using Fuel Doctor to clean the fuel system. Also there is a chance that the fuel you are using is crap so try at a different petrol station.

Hi Buff Hamster,

Ive read post in regards to fuel doctor. I Will be purchasing this tommorow and will give it a try. Can i confirm that this is the one to buy (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Fuel-Doctor-Fuel-Conditioner-275mL.aspx?pid=120027#Description).

The description says the whole bottle treats 11 tanks, should i use the entire bottle for an intial deep clean or just follow the instructions on the bottle ?

Posted

Yeah that's the one. I recommend pouring the whole bottle into and hopefully you won't have any more rough idle.

Sorry for not posting the results, was pretty busy over these couple of weeks with exams and stuff.

But anywhoo, i used the whole bottle but im still feeling the rough idleness still so i don't think it had that much of an affect. I just bought a Nulon Fuel Injector cleaner which i will use after i deplete my entire tank again and maybe give that a try.

If that fails as well, then i might just test drive another aurion to see if thats how the car drives (maybe a rental if i have time and the money). Will post to see if the injector cleaner did any impact.
