Sealant for head gasket problem

Got a Camry station wagon 1990 model. Approx 2 years ago radiator was losing water, took it to a radiator place, they said it was all fixed, drove it to work and engine overheated. Told it was possible head gasket problems but they couldn't be sure until they opened the engine up. Went to another mechanic and pressure tested the cooling system and said there was probable head gasket issues. He put some sort of sealer in and it was suppose to act as some sort of patch/gap filler where the head gasket sits. Anyway the car has run pretty well since then, just wondering is this a fairly permanent fix? Do you need to re-apply this sealer?
