Hi, Just wondering if anyone has experienced a 1 to 2 second rattle on cold start ups. Once started it will not do it again. Have read it could be the vvt-i gears need replacing. Any feedback would be great.

My corolla had this and I changed the oil filter and replaced the oil with synthetic oil.

That was last year and the problem has gone.

good grade of oil helps.. i found that the older the oil the more it rattled.

Just be careful, that used to happen to me during start up and i ended with a spun rod bearing. I was running synthetic 5-30 which it seems was a bit to light the temperatures in the caribbean even thow thats what toyota say to run. im running 10-40 now after the rebuild to be safe.

Might be that your running oil that is a little too thin try something a bit thicker and see if the problem persists

Thanks Alan, What grade of synthetic oil did you use.

I used valvoline 10w50 full synthetic.

It is good for all year around with the warm temperature in Sydney.

It might be too thick for a cold climate.
