I dont see any good conversions in the list here so I will show you guys mine.. :P

As title suggests I have removed the 2.8D and replaced it with a 1kzte..which is a turbo..

This motor was in KZN165R Hiluxs and Prados..

You must use the bellhousing and gearbox from the KZN.. I am using the standard LN front and rear diffs.. no problems at all.. It now has single shaft from transfer case to rear diff.. the 2 point shafts have to go.. a much smoother ride.

Goes hard.. not quite finished.. 3 inch exhaust is being fitted atm..

Howdy I'm thinking of sticking my kzn body gearbox and engine on the 106 chassis. I was wondering did you have to shift the engine mounts on your 106 chassis to accommodate the Kate motor

Posted (edited)

Yes you need to have the ECU... the 2.8D does not need one! lol All the loom required...

And to answer the last question.. yes.. you need to move the engine mounts about 2 inches... mine had a plate made up to adapt.. Im not sure of the legality of that yet..

Otherwise the cross member fits perfectly to the 1kz transfercase mount... you should get the single shaft from transfer case to diff..

The 2 point setup will not handle the power of the 1KZ.. and it is awesome...there is a notable turbo whistle from the exhaust on idle.. 3inch.. it is a sweet sound from the 3L!

Update.. the ute is going very well.. no blinkers but the headlights and brake lights work.. when I have the $ its going to auto electrician for final touches then off for certification by Engineer.. expecting this to be about $1500.

edit... here is the plate made to avoid cutting rail etc...

What I want to do is take my kz body and engine gear&transfer and stick it in the 106 chassis that's the plan myain concern is if the bodies will swap like a hot knif e through butter or do I need to get creative on the 106 chassis to fit it on there

Also who made your adapter plates and what state/ country are you doing this project in

I've got not idea about your chassis swap.. its not a bad idea.. the rewire wouldnt be fun.. my 106 chassis is perfect.

I'm on the NSW south coast.. the guy who made the plate lives in country Vic.. clever young mechanic.

Update..

Hilux is all wired up.. took an auto elec a few hours.. but worth every minute..

It passed blue slip today.. no engineers cert required..

So when your 2.8D goes clunk...

1KZ 3.0TD :D

Did you keep the dash from the LN106 or did you need to put the dash from the KZN165?
We are about to do this same mod, your post is helpful but we may need to get some more info if we get stuck!

Posted (edited)

Hi Bec... You will need the KZN165 dash... and the complete wiring loom.. send me a PM if you need advice.. :)

edit... the 3rd pic in this thread shows then KZN instrument panel... that is all you need.. just the instrument panel.. cause the KZN complete dashboard etc wont fit it in.. (so ive been told)

Hey mate did you have to cut your tunnel for the gearsticks to fit? If now what box did you use? And could you give us some measurements? Have tried what I was told was a hilux or surf box but my gearsticks are about 2" too far back. Cheers

Sorry for the late reply to above...

No I didnt have to cut anything related to gearbox... if its an LN106... the KZN165 Gearbox which comes with the 1kz should work perfect... your problem is the engine mounts which is probly the 2 inches in question.. see above pics for this mod.

I now have a snorkel.. I will update with some new pics. Engine bay is also tidier..

Im getting a new plenum made up from stainless as this one is a bit leaky on the manifold side.. losing boost under load, but its minimal.

Hi I'm in the process of doing this convention and was wondering how much clearance between the radiator to fan you have and where did you get the radiator from ? Having a few issues :(

Hello,

I'm using the original ln106 fan on the 1kz motor.. (maybe this is the difference?) I've got an ebay aluminium radiator that is larger than standard.

I had to remove some of the original fan housing on the right hand side.

What did you do about the engine mount position?

Hope this helps.

Righto I take it you put the plastic fan off the ln106 onto the 1kzte viscous hub ?

I have about 20 mm clearance at bottom off radiator using 1kzte fan which I thought was a bit close.

Engine mounts are adaptor plates based off how you made yours, maybe they are 10mm to fare forward however the gearbox cross member bolts in perfectly.

I was going to get an ebay radiator however I wasn't sure if they where any good an the outlets seem like they will have to be changed ?

Sorry about all the questions any advice is really appreciated

Yes you are right about the fan.. also I found that the 1kz motor moves a bit more when I revved it up and the fan bumped on the fan shroud.. so I just cut a section out and all good.

If the gearbox cross member all fits perfectly then you have the mounts right I would think..

The Radiators are completely different for the 1kz an 3l. I had to cut off the bend section on the bottom of the radiator I had for it to work.. I got one of the aluminium radiators you can find cheap on ebay for the 3L long before I did the conversion and it works perfectly..

Happy to help.. ask away

Ok cheers :)

the radiator off eBay is going to be a lot cheaper got quoted $800 for one to be made ! Although I'm sure it would be better quality I can't justify it.

Engine mounts must be good then have you had any problems with diff clearance?

I'm about to start the wiring...., not my favourite job but hopefully it will be going soon

Hi.. I cant make them for you... but I could possibly take some measurements for you and take some pics.. I wont be able to do this until the weekend though..

Here is a pic of the right mount.. as you can see the plate that is welded on the original mount is quite thick and measures about 11cm across.. the space between the centre of both bolts is 2 inches..

What you cant see is 2 extra small bolts that are below each large bolt. to stop pivoting.
