Hi All,

Seeking others opinions. When towing my caravan I sometimes downshift from 4th gear to 3rd gear manually to assist in slowing the car/caravan down before stopping. I have been told that this is not recommended as the auto trans can be damaged. anyone have any knowledge on this.

Thanks

John

Someone said to me once "brakes are cheaper than gearboxes"

As long as the anchors don't struggle slowing the combo, I'd let them do the work. Changing down under hard deceleration is as hard on the box as under acceleration. So if it's not needed, don't.

But dropping a gear for engine braking at the top of a hill, when there's little load on the drivetrain shouldn't cause any undue harm.

My two bob's worth, plus GST, anyway.

Extra weight = Greater strain on braking system, there are reasons for signs like these. They should also state(however don't) caravans and car trailers as well. At least use a lower gear especially on hills.

Engine braking doesn't suffer from brake fade either...
