Hi All, I have a 2016 SR Hilux 2.8L. On first take off in the morning, the auto transmission flares from 2nd to 3rd at approximately 2000RPM (in ECO mode). Occasionally it will flare from 2nd to 3rd and 5th to 6th when at normal operating temperature. It had a software update on Saturday, but this hasn't fixed the problem. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

It might be a good idea to also have the transmission oil level checked. Read a few internet posts where the transmission oil level was incorrect/underfilled from the factory.

As per the attachment [even though it is for an Aurion], it could be the valve body needs to be revised/replaced so keep in contact with your dealer.

Thanks campbeam,

I checked the auto oil this morning, cold, and it was about 40mm below the filler plug. I certainly believe this could be a viable source of the issue. Shame it wasn't checked by the dealer on the pre-delivery, 10000km service and as a check up when it had a software update for transmission issues...Any advice on whether this could have a long term impact on the transmission?

I am assuming that it is a sealed transmission [i.e. no dipstick] so similar to the Aurion, there is a specific/specialised procedure for checking the automatic transmission fluid level. If so, 40mm below the filler plug [when cold] may be quite OK.

As you have a new vehicle under warranty, best to leave it alone and/or get the dealer to check the fluid level even if t you have to pay for it.

Also keep in mind that the underlying issue may be the valve body or some other component.

Best to get advice from an automatic transmission specialist. Flaring is most likely increasing the wear on the friction plates and this could lead to early transmission failure/rebuild..

Hi,
I have been having the exact same issue with my 2016 2.8 SR5 hilux. It started at around 280km. I now have 14000km one year later and numerous trips back to the dealer and they said they can't reproduce it. One instance we did reproduce it and the test driver said it's normal.

This is in addition to, a squeak in the rear right still not resolved, voice activation taking upto 1 minute to respond, navigator restarting a few times on its own, whining noise coming from engine when cold in mornings.

I know its not normal, because I have driven other Hiluxes like mine and they don't flare or ***** between gear changes.

My symptoms are the same, however from cold, when i accelerate, between 2nd-3rd or 3rd-4th and 4th-5th, sometimes it flares, and sometimes it feels like someone bumped me from the back, either way, the car feels like it pulls back before engaging the next gear.

If I try to over take on the highway, at around 70kms/hr, and I accelerate, it is indecisive as to which gear to engage at first.

So far, I have taken it to my purchasing Dealer throughout the year, and two other dealers to see if they can see what the issue is. Each time, they didn't check the oil levels.

At least I know I'm not the only one experiencing this problem as my dealer is suggesting it is all in my head.

Hi Carlo,

I feel your frustration mate. Especially the list of other issues you are experiencing. My Hilux is very consistent with the transmission flare. It does it cold 2nd to 3rd from rev range 1800 - 2200 rpm. It only does it once from 2nd to 3rd when cold and then its right. Even if I have left my car at an overnight airport carpark and I burn around for a few minutes getting out of the carpark it won't do it. I had the oil level checked by the dealer and that has checked out OK. The ability to reproduce the flare is annoying as if I drive it to the dealer the car is already warm. If I leave it with them overnight they may not reproduce it when they get my car out of the workshop. A guy I work with said it's probably a sticky valve in the valve body and that's why it clears so quickly. Another slight and intermittent issue I have is when I take off the transmission clunks before delivering drive through the drive train. I am adamant it is in the transmission, but it's just getting Toyota to experience it and follow it through. I will keep you updated on any progress I make. One thing I have been meaning to do is placing my phone securely in the engine bay from cold and recording/video cameraing the issue to show evidence of it.

Regards

Steven

Hi Steve,

Have you had any further developments? Would you like to stay in touch? I took my Hilux to local dealer. I left the car overnight and we took it for a test drive the next morning. Like always, it didn't do it as aggressive as when I drive it. The test driver said that the flaring we are complaining about is normal we these transmissions and he said, I quote "even if I change 7 transmissions" they will all do the same thing....Do you think it would be wise to take it to an independent transmission specialist for a less biased opinion?

Also, have you experienced any long delays when using voice recognition from your steering wheel? It seems when I am playing music from a USB, it happens. When I press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel, there is a 20s delay before the voice says, how can I help you, and then another 20s delay before it beeps. then it functions like normal. However, like always, when I finally get to the dealer, it doesn't do it....Dealer is saying it is my phone Samsung s5.....

Regards,
Carlo.

Did you ever get this resolved? Im at the point of purchasing a valve body reseal kit and trying to repair it myself. I am sure it bleeds off pressure when parked causing this flare.

Just a suggestion that you contact Toyota Australia and confirm whether your vehicle is covered by the 5 year powertrain warranty before starting any repairs.
