Which Oil for Toyota Kluger 2017 - 0W20 any good

Hi All,

I wanted to start a discussion on OW20 engine oil for the new Kluger 2017 2WD.

The dealer recommends 10W30. The manual says OW20 or 5W30 or 10W30.

Just to be on the safer side, I drop the oil after 1000Km and noticed some debris (fillings) in the filter. But oil looked clean and felt like a 0W20.

I am suspecting it what is used in America where the car is made.

Filled in with new oil Penrite OW20 but later find out that Penrite recommends 5W30 (both full synthetic GL5).

When I have checked out the viscosity at high temperature OW20 is 8.7 cts and 5W30 is 11.3 cts. But quite a difference at low temperatures which is what you would expect.

Question1: is it safe to keep on using 0W20 or should I drop the oil and use 5W30.

Question2: Has there been any damage done (car has done an additional 2000km with 0W20).

I have seen on you tube videos where 0W20 is used for the new Kluger.

Appreciate your feedback.

You will find that oil manufacturers will defer to the recommendations by the manufacturer. Therefore your ultimate guide is the user manual.

I have looked up various Australian Lube Guides and they consistently recommend 5W30 for your vehicle.

Best to check the User Manual for Recommended oil viscosity and anticipated temperature range.

You should be using the recommended oil viscosity to avoid engine damage/undue wear.

The recommended oil viscosity for my 2006 2GR-FE include 10W-30, 15W-40 and 20W-50. When preparing for an interstate trip and expecting to be encountering 30C+ days, I chose a higher viscosity oil i.e. 10W-40 or 15W-40.

Most likely very appropriate when driving in winter snow conditions.

The following URL highlights when selecting engine oil to not only consider the viscosity but also the API Service Rating; highest current rating is SN.

When buying oil, I prefer either the GF-5 or SN for the additional oil sludge protection.
