For the past 1000k's or so, ive noticed the tappets in my '04 Ascent are becoming louder and louder when the engine is cold.

Its now getting noticeable even when the engine has warmed up.

I think it might have something to do with the valve spacings.

Anybody else had this problem? Got a good fix?

Seeing as the car is still under warranty, i think it might be time to take it back for some repairs...

possibly the tensioner on your timing chain, or you're running low on oil...

Nah im pretty sure its the tappets.

Plus, there is no chance on running low on oil. Since the noise has started, ive changed oil...

it would be very unusual for your buckets to wear enough to make an audible noise in a newish car. If the tension isn't right on the chain it will get a very noisy valvetrain.

ps, are you sure a 1ZZ has tappets?

Yeah your right about the chain tension, but its not a loud noise that im getting

Just a slight tapping noise.

And only when the car is cold really. Hardly does it when its warm.

Ive been told the tappets are suppose to last at least 300,000k's without any adjustment to the spacing at all.

But probably because ive driven my car really hard, that brought it down alot.

(ps. yes, the 1zz has tappets. not sure if they are the hydraulic system or not though. if so, im f**ked)

There are no tappets. The cams interface with the shim-under buckets which actuate the valves.

If its not the tappets, then what could it be?

Remember, it only really occurs when the engine is cold

Doesnt really happen when its warm

(edit. its a slight tapping noise)

chain tensioner or the VVTi pulley.

chain tensioner.

Is that classed as a warranty job?

How long will the car be off the road for do you think?

1 more question too, how long can i wait before getting it to Toyota? Whats the urgency?

chain tensioner or the VVTi pulley.

1zz

It only happens when the car is idleing too

Not when its in gear

a 1zz has VVTi, and a VVTi pulley on the inlet cam.

Tensioner doesn't take that long to replace, but I bet Toyota will tell you the noise is "normal"

Yeah, ive had that 'normal' bulls**t from Toyota before.

I went to them about a loud noise every time i took my foot off the accelerator while in 2nd and 3rd gears, above 3K revs

They said it was normal, and only the engine brake.

No way is this noise normal. Because when i first bought the car, i dont remember hearing any 'engine brake'

Posted

if its still under warranty take it back.....if they give you any probs go and get a random car out of their yard and start it up..see if the noise is "normal" and see what they have to say then.

Anymore help on this people??

Ive had the same problme wen i bought mine,It a matter of dry/loose lash adjusters, lack of oil does that & ive added an oil that i lil lighter in vicosity & after a cuple of seconds idling it goes away,My engines done short of a hundred kays..once an awhile it comes up to haunt me,but ive been told its normal with variable valve timing engines even with the Vtecs .

But ive ure worried about it take it back to the dealerships..

Ive got the car booked in for tomorrow.

I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes

Thanks for all the help once again!

(ps. if anybody has a technical diagram so i can see exactly where the chain tensioner is, that would be a great help!)

Where is that available from?

The AUS Toyota website? Or this forum??

google the vvti or vvtli & somewhere in there has a diagram of the timing setup

The chain tensioner is in the case that i have taken off the engine, but it puts pressure on the little black plate where the arrow in the pic is.

Dude thanks heaps for the pic. Great help

Can i just ask though, does the tensioner mount to the left of that little black plate? Or is it mounted 'on top' of it?

Northy, going through the service manual (that you uploaded)

Where can i find a parts catelouge?

If there is one, does it have a diagram of the part that i want?

(in this case, chain tensioner)

(ps. im still not 100% percent convinced that it is the timing chain tensioner. why would that make a tapping noise?)
